I have wanted a 'scout' rifle for the better part of a decade, as a good general purpose/ woods loafing weapon. I made a few of the pseudo-scouts, but I've always wanted something a bit more purpose built. As both the Steyr and custom models are far too rich for my blood, the Savage Scout rifle caught my eye in a jiffy. I've kept my eyes peeled for one for years! Most gunshops have either never heard of it (the most likely case), or haven't ever seen one in person. And prices quoted to me to order a new one were frankly not that far off from a used Steyr! So the wait continued.

But as luck would have it, while perusing the BF classifieds, a local gent in my region was selling one! To boot, it was at a price that hardly anyone could pass up. Well I met with him tonight and came home about 7 pounds wealthier. :D

The Savage is just what I hoped and expected it would be. The balance is perfect for carry, with a balance point right behind the scope. The action is robust and serviceable, and I plan to cycle it into 'butter-like' status, hehe. The trigger is crisp, albeit slightly heavy at around 4 lbs. But a heavy trigger has never bothered me so long as it's crisp. The package as a whole is compact and lightweight, and frankly just makes you want to go shootin'! The mag sits very tightly with a very positive ejection, and I don't foresee having to deal with the 'auto ejection' some people have reported.

I've used the forward mounted scope ("long eye relief") several times to good effect, and found that I much prefer it where applicable. It gives you a full field of view and allows you to shoot with both eyes open. Luckily in the event of a failure, there are always ghost ring backups on this rifle (one of my favorite parts!!). The front site is also a blade, versus the bead front site that I had prepared myself to see.

It's good to get your hands on a grail! Range reports will follow, when possible.

Nice rifle. When my son went off to school he had to sell his 308 Browning A-Bolt light weight synthetic stalker. I bought it from him so that when I was done hunting, he could have it back. Before that I was always trying different rifles and caliber. Since I bought that, I have not even looked at another center fire rifle, never will most likely. With the right bullet and load, it is really all the rifle I will ever need for the lower 48 states. I have a 45-70 for anything bigger.

Brother Spooky, let me be the first to inform you sir, that you SUCK !!;) The mods should bannish you from the group and confiscate that abomination and place it better hands to be well taken care of, namely me !!:D

Mighty fine tool Bud..

ENjoy it !!

Very slick piece, scout rifles are awesome:thumbup:

Can you use the BUIS with the scope still mounted?

Sweet rifle and congrats on picking up a "grail"- nothing like it!

Spooky...very nice indeed.

I sort of have one, but am seriously thinking of going back to just iron sights on the Mosin-Nagant. I got lucky scoring a 2.3x Leupold LER, but for what I do, really not necessary.

When I first turned the Civil Guadia .308 into a scout, the cheap LER .22 scopes smiled at me and committed suicide. :) I'm told NC Star scopes work well. Dunno personally.

The three centerfire rifles I have are the 7.62x54 M-N, the .308 Civil Guardia, and an old Winchester 94. If I had to only keep one, it would be the .308. It was bubba'd when I got it, and I found after cleaning it up...it worked just fine. Neat reliable beater.

Your rifle looks clean and sharp. Hope you are happy with it.

Be safe.

You bastid....:grumpy: I saw you scored that. I was gonna drive to Kentucky for it at that price, then I saw you scored it..:o

Congrats man. Those are super hard to come by(as you know), and you got a terrific deal. Its one of my "grail" werapons as well.....:thumbup:

I know you will love it. You know your guns man. :)

Awesome rifle and 308 is a fine cartridge. Im very impressed by the sights. They are alot better than I expected. Keep us updated, I'm curious how the mag stands up.

I have a Steyr Prohunter in 308 and right out of the box it had problems feeding from the mag. Turns out the mag had a weak spring which would allow the bolt to miss the cartridge. Steyr customer service is great they sent a new one, Problem solved.

Damn. I like that. Sweet score bro!
