I have wanted a 'scout' rifle for the better part of a decade, as a good general purpose/ woods loafing weapon. I made a few of the pseudo-scouts, but I've always wanted something a bit more purpose built. As both the Steyr and custom models are far too rich for my blood, the Savage Scout rifle caught my eye in a jiffy. I've kept my eyes peeled for one for years! Most gunshops have either never heard of it (the most likely case), or haven't ever seen one in person. And prices quoted to me to order a new one were frankly not that far off from a used Steyr! So the wait continued.
But as luck would have it, while perusing the BF classifieds, a local gent in my region was selling one! To boot, it was at a price that hardly anyone could pass up. Well I met with him tonight and came home about 7 pounds wealthier.
The Savage is just what I hoped and expected it would be. The balance is perfect for carry, with a balance point right behind the scope. The action is robust and serviceable, and I plan to cycle it into 'butter-like' status, hehe. The trigger is crisp, albeit slightly heavy at around 4 lbs. But a heavy trigger has never bothered me so long as it's crisp. The package as a whole is compact and lightweight, and frankly just makes you want to go shootin'! The mag sits very tightly with a very positive ejection, and I don't foresee having to deal with the 'auto ejection' some people have reported.
I've used the forward mounted scope ("long eye relief") several times to good effect, and found that I much prefer it where applicable. It gives you a full field of view and allows you to shoot with both eyes open. Luckily in the event of a failure, there are always ghost ring backups on this rifle (one of my favorite parts!!). The front site is also a blade, versus the bead front site that I had prepared myself to see.
It's good to get your hands on a grail! Range reports will follow, when possible.
