Kalimalena said:Actually it's my given Hawaiian name.... Hawaiian names traditionally must be given to you by someone other than yourself or your parents... some years back I helped out a really nice old Hawaiian man and he asked me if I had a Hawaiian name... I said no... he laughed and said he would give me a really good name... he would give me his name... Kalimalena.... I am very honored... this man was a Sergeant Major in the Green Berets.... the story of this name is that it was given to his great great great grandfather by King Kamehameha of the Hawaiian Islands... the story goes his ggggrandfather was a personal guard for the King and as such stood at the King's side by his throne all day holding a huge spear.... one day King Kamehameha saw that his ggggrandfather had been standing for a long time and so asked him to sit at his side.... when he did ... King Kamehameha saw that his hand was stained a yellowish color from holding the great wooden spear to protect the King.... at that moment King Kamehameha gave his ggggrandfather the name Kalimalena which in Hawaiian I was told by this kind old gentleman means "Yellow Hand".... This honor was further enhanced because this kind gentleman, Mr. William Melemai, insisted that I also meet his wife.... she was shocked and laughing and told me that I should be very honored... because her husband had not even given his own sons that name... He had given it to me she said because I was a total stranger so willing to help out her husband....
Cool story huh... totally true... I promise... I like to tell the story when people ask because it allows me to honor Mr. Melemai and his ancestors... and I do so here with that intent....
