I had planned to do a review thread about pumpkin carving, but I was so disgusted with the results, I decided against it. Here's a brief summary.
I decided to do a head-to head comparison of pumpkin carvin' knives. Knives used for the test:
BRKT Bravo-1
Koster Bushcraft in 3V
Mora Scout
Busse Game Warden
Victorinox cheapie paring knife
Y'all can probably guess which knife absolutely dominated the competition. The little Vic, of course. I can remember clearly using a Ka-Bar to carve pumpkins before, and don't recall having any problems. I don't know if the pumpkins I picked up this year were especially tough or what, but the knives I chose were NOT up to the task. I felt like such a chump. Out of frustration, I pulled my trusty little Vic paring knife out of the block, and it cut through those pumpkins like they were made out of butter.
Lesson learned. Pumpkin carving calls for a smallish, very thin blade. I picked the little paring knife up for less than $5 in a grocery store in Switzerland to cut some cheese with. It worked so well, I couldn't throw it away, so I brought it home in my luggage.
The stupid little knife is by FAR the most used knife in the house. I wish I'd picked up a couple more- the wife and I are always fighting over it in the kitchen. The thing drives me crazy- I have literally thousands of dollars in fancy steel all over the house. And the knife that gets used the most is the cheapest, dumbest one of the lot.
