Im trying ti figure out a bag(s) for my family. I have tons of gear but I use sell or whatever to try and build a tank proof bag to help ease my Wife and 2 year old daughters minds and comfort in a situation that we would use such a bag! I'll list things I would like in this bag. and we will all help to build a system for 3. Let not go with the best of the best lets stick to best bang for your buck!

SHELTER- I have a Eurieka tentragon 9 sleeps 4. What would be good option light weight heavy duty and around $200

Sleep system- Small compact bags around the 20 degree mark. I have US issue gortex Bivys I would like to use. I need a system for me my wife
and daughter. Bags and mats for $300ish

Cook set- I have this covered. But what do you think? I have a stainless set I found in my father inlaws basement.

Water Filtration- I have skills to secure water for the long haul but whats a decent filter for a transition time. I was thinking of the hiker but i have never owned a pump filter. I would also like to know a carry system/storage.

Blades- I have ESEEs and they will do just fine. But what would you use.

I would also need Packs. I would be carrying the Large bag and my wife around a 3000 cube bag she is very small. I would like a 5-7k cube bag plus I would stuff a LARGE dry bag in whatever pack I would end up with and then put everything inside that.

Fire- Strike force, back up LMF rod. cotton balls and a tube of JY only to be used in a MUST have fire now situation. what would you use.

Im leaving tons of things out but I already have them and they work dont plain on changing thing

I have tons of gear knowledge and I have my ideas but I would like to hear others ideas. The Packs,Shelter and sleep system are the ones Im
really struggling on.

Ive thought about this one a bit

We got around the issue of a family bag by giving everyone in the family a bag .
We dont have just a bug out bag tho .. we have a bag thats more aimed at a camping / survival set up .

Its all done from the cheap sections of the grocery world tho , no brand name gear , but the gear we use is OK , it is our camping gear , and its all there ready if we have to just grab it and go .. go to a friend house next town , next state , or just for a couple nights camping .

Your post did get me to check out the kids bags tho , I have to fix a few things , I been slack lately :)

I'm an old fart, so my thinking has done a 180 back to bugging in, but I do live in hurricane country....I plan on a temporary resettlement with anything bigger than a CAT 3 tropical storm...my car is my lifeboat...my equipment box for the propane stove/tanks, electronics, food prep is a Sears rolling tool box with telescoping handle (you can sit on it to get off the wet ground).... Blackhawk HydraStorm GHB with typical equipment rides in the car with FAK, blow out trauma kit, GI poncho and mosquito net...tarp ... case of water... Sawyer .1 micron 5gal bucket filter pre drilled..additional 7gal AquaTainer.... the bucket will transport some canned goods, and a SteriLite box that bungees on for relatively dry additional transport... the Glock and carbine are fairly water resistant

Well I don't have kids and I go pretty minimal so I can't really give you any ideas as far as gear goes. It'll be biased by your wants and skill level. One thing I can recomend is to keep it as light as possible. Nothing is funnier then guys posting their kitchen sink loadouts. If you never have to carry it sure put 60-80 pounds of gear in there. LOL Go as light as you can within your comfort zone and skill level.

My threats here are flood , fire chemical spill , and I watch our govt too , never trust a politician ...
Nothing I want to hang around for . I pack the kids up and go for a holiday if we have extended power outages even .

Shelter- Look into REI's Halfdome 4. Bomber tent, solid construction, fantastic reviews. I'm sure you can hunt around for one under 2 bills.
Bags- I got my kids the Northface Tigger. 20 degree bag, only 2 pounds, solidly built, fits up to 5' tall!
Water filtration- I use MSR's Miniworks Ex. Outstanding filter, the USMC uses it in Recon units. Effectively removes protozoa and bacteria, including Giardia and Cryptosporidum.

Those are my thoughts for now...
