Hi this is DaQo'tah

Lets compare what each Grinder costs.

I think its High time that we have a topic where new guys to this Knife making hobby can come and see first hand what kind of money it takes to buy the different types of belt grinders...

Now because of the different ways some grinders can be set up, I will have to leave it to you to decide what to include and what to exclude as you add up in you price totals.

Remember we are sharing information that is aimed at helping the new knife maker come to grips with the expenses that lay in store as a person thinks about entering the field of Knife making...

Please Be Honest!
Please don't include special deals or sale prices, Let us seek to equip the new knife maker with the basic dollar numbers.

So now, What was the most common price for the grinder that you use?

And to augment Mr. Bump's post, the knifemaker attachment includes a 2" and 5" wheel.
Who has a Bader?

The first grinder purchase is difficult. for the knifemaker beginner...
And in many cases it does not have much money to devote to it...

Before buying my grinder, I have tried to make a list of the most
used grinder in knifemaking. Here what I had done at that time
(I make this to put on my web site, but my Web site is not finished yet...)
This list is not complete, and the prices are not perhaps up to date any
more, but that makes it possible to compare them by seeing them...

By hoping that can be usefull to somebody...

Here are my list of grinders:

1) Grizzly G1015 ~$350 shipped. - Just sold it to a new Knifemaker.

2) KMG-6 $745/wo motor - no shipping, picked it up at a Hammer-in.

3) Beaumont 1X48 Edge Finishing grinder - $590/wo motor - no shipping, picked it up at a Hammer-in.

4) 9" Beveled face disk grinder - $65/wo motor - shipping ~$10?

5) 9" Beveled face disk grinder - $89/wo motor - no shipping, picked it up at a Hammer-in.

6) 9" HF 3/4 h.p. vertical flat face disk grinder - ~$80 with tax?

7) Another KMG I'll be picking up at the Blade Show and outfitting with a VFD/3 phase motor.

Accessories I have: 14", 10", 8", 6", 4", 3", 2", 1.5" contact wheels. Slack belt attachment. Small wheel attachment with 2", 1.5", 1", 3/4", 1/2", 5/16", 3/16" contact wheels. Flat Platen attachment. Tooling arms, etc.

Motor/controller for KMG - 2 h.p. VFD drive/3 phase motor. - $385 145T frame

Motor/controller for Horizontal Grinder - 1 h.p. VFD/3phase motor - $290 56hc frame

Motor/controller for 9" disk grinders - Motors are 2 h.p. treadmill motors from American Science and Surplus - ~$56 each shipped. Controllers from Surplus Center ~$25 each shipped.

Ok, I guess that's my list for grinders. I think Mike Hull summed it up nicely in an earlier post of why I prefer the KMG so much more than others on the market...Just look at all of the attachments available for it, it is just an extremely versatile grinder for the price, and the construction and design are top notch as well. Also, in general, going with a VFD/motor combo seems to be more cost effective than going with a DC drive/motor. All just my opinions! :)

Prices are for 2"x72" with 8" contact wheels except the Hardcore Grinder for which you add the price of the contact wheel except the first one (just to make it complicated).

I LOVE my JL's!! The horizontal and vertical are awesome IMHO... Cant beat the good ole Wilton though. Some things I do, I can only do on the Wilton.. Arguably the best, first grinder you could have...

My BIII has a platen with a 2" serrated wheel on the bottom, 10" serrated wheel, 3/4" wheel & fork, two tool rests, 1.5 HP DC variable speed, cost $2000. Later I added Rob Frink's Rotary Platen, $400.

I have two Burr King 960's, one is variable speed and has the knife makers attachment, the other is as they come with an Iiams Platten. I love them dearly.
I also have a custom Bader with a one inch idler and and a 3 inch idler, use it for guards and handles. The Bader cost arounnd $1,000.

The folks at Bader are great guys to work with.

One thing about grinders, they do not lose all their value, you buy one, if it is a good one it will last, serve well and still be worth good money should you chose to sell it.

I have two Burr King 960's 11/2 HP, variable speed, each with knifemaker attachment, small wheel attachment with 1/2, 5/8" and 3/4" wheels, two extra 8"X 1" contact wheels, 10", and 14" contact wheels.
One Blademaster 2X72", variable speed belt grinder with knifemaker attachment, small wheel assy., and extra 10" wheel. Blademaster value, $800.00-1000.00. The Burr King prices were listed on an earlier post by Gaben.
