(I know its not INFI - but you all will enjoy this one - but do get a drink first:thumbup:)

For those that intend to do some brush clearing with their Waki - Warning!

I was chopping at some brush that had over grown near my parents garden on their hobby farm yesterday. We were learning the correct approach and working on our tech. Small trees and branches had cleaner cuts than some of the brush that given its flexibility had more rips and messy cuts.

As I moved to some low lying branches of a oak - I swung and missed (we did have a better appreciation for watching where the follow through would go at this point) so I moved in for a better angle. I chopped two more times - and all of a sudden a cloud of what I thought were flies came out of the branches and moved towards my brother. He swatted one away from his nose and shouted .. WASPS!!!!

That was all I need to hear but as I started running one zapped me in the leg. I kept running and that little bastrd kept stinging! When I got out a bit I started a swing from my Waki to get him off. I was going to use the flat of the blade to smash him off. I was pissed off and just wanted to kill him soooo badly. But despite the excitement I pulled back on the swing - last thing I needed at this point was a chunk of my leg missing. He pulled off of me - perhaps from my manly war cry ( little girl scream?) and I was up and running. ....We both got away largely with only scrapes from our blind, hysterical running through the field.

To the point - we came back later and found a three foot long two foot wide paper wasps nest about two feet above where I was chopping. They were only disturbed by the shaking of the branches as I chopped , never even seeing the nest above- I can only think of what would have happened if I had actually slashed that nest!

So be careful out there while swashing away. This could have been really bad.

(no - thank goodness no one got pics of our manly adventure. It would have a made a great you tube for sure - but we did have a good laugh when we both made it to the house in one piece)

Geez...Be careful:)

PLEASE

I don't get it. You were holding a razor sharp short sword in your hands? Why run??
:D

My Hog-Foo was too low. I am but a simple padawan. I need to trust in the INFI more!:D:thumbup:

(and thanks Amy - my ego was a little bruised after this adventure. I have been stung enough times over the years that (esp a wasp) stings really hit me pretty hard and I was not about to go at it with a swarm - the house always wins in that contest)

Wasp nest make crappy piñatas, they do make for a damned fast hundred yard dash though.:D

Glad you guys made out OK.

You may want to think about a Benadryl pocket on your Waki sheath.:)

This is what the little stinkers look like - for them that have never had the pleasure of a meet N greet.;)... You think I could have sliced them out of the sky - but my instinct had taken over and I was a running!

And here is about the size of nest I was swatting under...... Bet there were a whole bunch more inside just waiting to come out and say "Hi"

Wasps or hornets?

That critter looks like a yellow jacket, but the nest looks like a hornets' nest. Yellow jackets often live underground. Hornets build nests like the one above.

I know the terms wasp and hornet are interchangeable for some, but I tend to think of particular creatures with each name.

Those are Bald-faced Hornets, and they nest in trees. Yellow Jackets are a type of hornet, but they nest under ground or on/in a structure like a house/barn/garage or doghouse.

My brother and I used to have a lot of fun disturbing BF'd hornet nests out in the woods of NE Ohio where we grew up!! Slingshots, rocks, sticks, water balloons.....we used it all!!! We learned very quickly to pre-plan our egress!!! A half dozen or so stings will make you do a little planning!! Man...those were the days!!!

Ok - Hornets. Either way I do not like messing with them :)

However, as a youngster I too messed with bees - water balooning them, shooting arrows and firecrackers into their nests. But even then we did not screw around with hornets and waps. They played for keeps!

As I have aged I have progressively become more sensitive to stings. When once it was just a bee sing has now become a big time swelling. And Hornets (wasps!) are even more nasty.

But thanks for the correct id :D

I had a similar, though not so painful, experience clearing some elm growth close to the house. Had to replace a piece of siding and a grape vine that got hit by the mughty INFI.

Glad you didn't get any worse.

Glad only one got you - ouch!

I was using a weed wacker weekend before last and had a close call with a hornets nest that was built in small privet bush about a foot off the ground. Not sure if I have ever seen another one built on the ground as most are up on a tree limb -

This time of the year I usually find several yellow jacket nests - the hard way :( Hard to see them when they build in the ground, until it's too late

I hear ya!

Of all the things Ive ever been affraid of, "THings with Wings that Stings", may just scare me the most:D

As an ignorant 6th grade I decided to smash a hornet's nest with some rocks. Obviously they did not take too kindly to me ruining their habitat. So I was attacked and had a few stuck in my shirt. I was stung seven time on the neck alone. That was when I found out I am allergic to bee/hornet/wasp stings. I was rushed to the hospital and given some shots so my throat would open up. I deserved what I got, but it was still a pretty scary moment.

I HATE wasps. I have some the size of harrier jets living outside one of my windows.

There all in the wasp family, but like Guyon said most refer to the commom paper wasp as just "wasp". Not very aggressive.

As you found out hornets or yellow jackets are very aggresive and protect there nest at all cost. They always have 2 or 3 Sentries flying around the nest ready to strike.
Thats prob the ones that got you, but I bet there were more right behind.

The pic is a hornets nest, but the wasp pic looks like a yellow jacket??? We look for and can spot hornets nest before getting to close(most of time), but yellow jackets usually build underground and are hard to detect...the bastids. If you ever see the 2 or 3 sentries just above ground you know there's a hidden nest below.

Glad they didn't get you to bad, had the gang caught up with you it could have been bad!

BTW- good running:p:thumbup:, only thing you can do is out run the bastids.
