Let's get an E-mail Group going on the E & E - sensitive topics...

Did everyone in this thread get some type of E-mail response like GOTCHA?

If someone is missed, shoot me an E-mail.

Hmm...well, it could just be how to augment your RAT E & E Kit or your own Kit you have already assembled with various other tools. Then, it might branch out into how to use various types of tools.

I would imagine that some people just want to take a peek at the tools and might not be interested in learning about them, etc. Curiousity killed the cat. :)

Just got through reading the book: "The Greatest Escape Stories Ever Told: Twenty-Five Unforgettable Tales"

Pretty good read and deals with great escapes all the way from the 1700s up to modern day. There were a couple of things that stood out to me, a lot of them had some type of map (either stolen, hidden or built in their head), many of them did some type of physical training during captivity to prepare for their escape, and almost all of them saved anything and everything they thought could be used as a tool.

I think people are fairly spoiled when it comes to survival gear in many ways. For example, they sometimes criticize the inclusion of a single edged razor blade in some of these survival kits like the Penrith Survival Kit. Instead of thinking about what they could possibly do with a tool like that, they just discard the whole notion of it.

Like you, I go back and read about how people have survived various situations. When you read Dry Guillotine or Hell on Trial by Rene Belbenoit, you get an idea for just how valuable some of these little tools can be.

Jeff, I am going to take you out of the E-mail List. I didn't think about it last night but you probably get half a ton of E-mail a day. I will just send you the important stuff in a summary, depending on how everything goes with the List.

Don, by all means, please add me to the list. I obviously wasn't on it. I would be interested in reading others thoughts on this.

And, IMO, you are absolutely right about people being spoiled to survival gear. I had a customer email me complaining about the button compass we put in a kit. He said he would pay 20 bucks for a good compass. I would too (actually I will pay 100 bucks for a great compass), but that would most likely keep a lot of people from purchasing the kit that may actually need it. Button compasses, IMO, are fantastic for gross direction finding - even the cheap ones. Most people don't understand that pocket E&E / Survival kits are for last ditch measures. They are made small and compact so they will be carried all the time. The razor blade, small saws, wire, etc. are extremely valuable tools if that's all you have when you have to bail out in the middle of nowhere and make it back to someplace friendly. Even the foil from a chewing gum wrapper can be valuable in the right circumstance.

OK-Dokey, I will leave you in instead of just E-mailing you the meat and taters of the exchanges, etc.

There has not been one exchange as of yet, I only figured that about a dozen people would respond and I have a lot more than that in the List. 8-)

Button Compasses! I call them Thataway Compasses because that's just about what they are - let's go thataway. :D

I have so many of these damned things around here from getting kits and other gear over the years, I have them coming out of my ears. From Doug Ritter's Kits, Penrith and BCB Tins, Bob Cooper's Aussie Kit ( a bit smaller than the standard 20mm that are more commonly available) and some old USGI Button Compasses from Tropical Hot/Wet Weather Kits and SRU-16P Parachute Survival Kits. Jake was kind enough to send me a Sun Brand (the one you found a month or more ago) that is dry and I have a couple of the NATO-Peyser Brass Button Compasses. ALL of them are accurate checked out with a Brunton and a Waltham USGI Lensatic.

They will all work to give you general direction and that's the beauty of them. Some people kind of get hung up on criticizing them as well, like a 20mm piece of plastic an 1/8" of an inch thick is going to take up so much space or weigh them down. 8-)
