Let's hear your stories of accidental edge destruction.

For me its chisels.. hitting nails when there shouldn't be any there.

Yup. I find really good chisels (Marples, Footprint, even an unmarked Japanese chisel) at flea markets here all the time, and I've restored a few of them. Same thing with plane irons. It's funny how many have little half-round divots out of the edge - that look like half the size of a nail's diameter. I've cut up firewood and found nails (and bullets) embedded in the wood, where something was nailed to a tree and the tree grew around it.

A shop instructor at my job taught my how to sharpen chisels & plane irons. It takes quite a while with water stones (and honing guides with the irons), but I can usually get them back to working order.

I remember going to close this knife as a kid, problem was the bail was in the way. Lesson learned... oh and I broke the awl when trying to pry a nail out of a piece of wood.

Not accidental, but I did some on purpose edge destruction today. A literal pet project for the wife. Had a xm -18, and a Izula on me at the time but decided to use a crkt s.p.e.w. to cut the carpet, about four feet rendered the edge useless.

I was taking out a Black Sage bush at the end of the day as the light went away. I was swinging a BK4 to chop the surprisingly durable stems, went too far and hit a concrete paver that was obscured by dirt at the base of the plant. It threw spark and dulled up in that spot, but some time on the Sharpmaker brought it right back. Beckers are built tough.

I kept my Southard Tolk and Spyderco GB1 side by side in a drawer.
I found that the edge of Tolk near the choil was badly blunted and exhibited shiny areas under sun light about 1 inch long.

I don't really know what happened, but guess that the hump back of GB1 slid into the handle of Tolk and hit the edge.
I'll never keep my knives side by side without a divider.

I cringed reading that! I'd consider crying or throwing the knife in anger if I did a full-swing into concrete.
