Let's hear your worst (or best) sheeple experiences.

I recently got a new folder, and even though it's normal size, every reaction I've gotten so far has been completely positive. Even from folks I was concerned would give me crap about my "weapon". If this knife had been black, with angular grinds, I am confident some of those reactions would have been negative...

Also, when I finished my big Bowie knife, I brought it in to show my coworkers. One man I worked closely with, and considered a friend, was afraid to be in the same room as the knife. Rather than just giving up on him, I finally made him hold the knife, saying it was just an inanimate object. Within seconds, his eyes lit up, and he was testing its balance. Sometimes I think many of us give up on our fellow man too easily. As we say in our company, it's our job to turn problems into opportunities.

I think my best one is at work. I work in a kitchen at a hospital and i usually get the job of breaking down boxes to be recycled, everyone knows i have a knife always no one cares because i dont act dumb with it, i use it and put it away. One day for some reason the personel manager of the kitchen was helping breaking boxes down as i came into work. So i pull out my knife and and she looks at me a goes whats that for incase you need to kill someone in the parking lot?!? So i stand there and watch her try and rip a large cardboard box down a corner seam with her bare hands. I take it from her and cut it where she was trying to rip it and throw it in the hopper. "Thats why I carry a knife let me know if you want one too." She just went back inside and left me to finish the work.

Well I've had quite a few bad experiences but monday I had a nice one. My girlfriend had to go to the police dept. to get finger printed, she's going to be a teacher and it's just something they need from her before she can teach I guess. So I saw on the door "No Weapons allowed in this building, blah blah blah" so I told her I couldn't go in, had a BM Mini-Pika and Kershaw Leek on me, oh and a SAK on my keychain. Well anyways she goes in and I'm waiting outside, it's snowing, I'm freezing my ass off. So finally I said screw it and went inside. Went up to the front desk and told the officer I had 3 knives on me and asked if I could check them with her. Come to find out she knew me! She worked with my dad who was a cop there for 30 years. She didn't even make me leave my knives with her, let me right up to the 4th floor where the girlfriend was, no problems at all and didn't even need to go through the metal detector.

One of my coworkers found over 10 knives in her 15 year old son's room while cleaning recently. She is fairly liberal and was upset over the discovery. After a discussion with her son and her husband, she has allowed him to keep his collection secure in a secure place.

The parents are now using his knife collection hobby as an incentive for good school work. I was allowed to give him a small canoe folder as a gift "from one knife nut to another." Since then, I have been giving him knife magazines and telling his Dad of great websites like this one.

This kid's parents have no knife experience or affinity. Pretty neat folks to think it out and see it for what it is: a fun hobby.

I have never had anything but positive experiences, and comments,on
any knife I have ever carried, and for the last 4 years my EDC
has been a 7'' fixed blade pocket knife that shows about 2 1/2''
out the top of my pocket.
I even had a cop pull me over just to ask me about the graham knives logo
on the back of my jeep. I showed him a couple knives, talked knives a few minutes, he took a card , and I went on my way. I guess some of it has to do with where you live.

it's always nice to hear about an officer of the law who's genuinely interested in our hobby, rather than condemning it. btw, that PK is absolutely gorgeous, Jon!

After having friends, family and strangers freak out about my carrying an old Delica and sometimes an old M16 13 folder (sans flipper), I have started carrying a SOG Blink, discreet, and it doesn't scare the living S out of people. I also carry a Spyderco Ladybug. I was a manager at Wally World, my manager at the time almost died of fright when I pulled a big Jaguar tanto folder out of my pocket. This was back in the days before I realized that Chinese made knives were junk ;). My sisters have told me that I am nuts for carrying a knife, or even owning my 50+ pieces. Same as my mother. That said, my oldest younger sister wants a knife to carry in her purse, just as a tool. I'm going to give her my old barlow first, and see if she likes it, then I'll give her something better. My little bro' wants one of my tactical pieces, when he is about 15, I'll give him one. My father says that my tactical knives are goofy looking, he has about 5 pieces, mainly old Schrade style pieces and an old Buck hunting knife, and a Frost stockman I bought him. Oh yeah, also a boat knife I bought him and my uncles. Anyway, some of my immediate family thinks knives are okay, some freak out, all of them think I have way too many. I am on a friends with benefits plan right now, but past girlfriends have usually freaked out when I empty my pockets on their nightstands, and I lay two knives down. Only one liked knives, and she turned out to be certifiable  . I've bought a couple knives for my uncle, he likes them, but doesn't collect them. As for friends, an old friend at WM had a huge Buck folder, it was pretty old but in good shape, and he would use it to specifically freak out the customers and employees at the store, but everybody liked him, so it was cool. Another friend tells me to get rid of all of my knives and buy Mora knives, he says they retain their sharpness forever, even though the handles rot off instantly. Another only collects Franklin Mint knives and the only knife he uses is a CRKT I gave him. I know people who buy the most expensive kitchen cutlery, but then go ahead and buy crappy Chinese made knives, and vice versa. Generally, knives are looked upon with disdain, and I have been told that "knife people" are the outcasts of society and should be avoided at all costs  . This from people who help out at halfway houses! I haven't had any real uncomfortable situations, but I have had people freak out about what I was carrying, and I have just stopped trying to explain.

The only personn at work who is completely cool with any knife I happen to have is my boss, who carries an SAK. Other people tend to "migrate" to the other side of the lab when they see me using a knife, like they don't trust me with something so dangerous. And these are the same people who trust me with their computers containing years and years of research data, undergraduate exams, personal email, etc...!

heh.

i carried/carry a strider EB on my belt all the time. usually it's covered up by my untucked shirt or my jacket. lots of people react to it if i take it out to cut/pry something. but i guess they should cause... it's a strider.

i've started carrying around an opinel in my front pocket to avoid this effect.

That sounds awfully familiar to me. I understand and greatly sympathize with anyone who has to hazard that particular plight ("no honey, they're just tools. And yes, I really do need two of them... And my multitool...").

What about your flashlight? :D

Oily

I think anything opened with a flourish will raise eyebrows and attention. My sog multi-tool for instance, I open it like a bali simply to use the pliers. I've seen electrician friends flick all kinds of tools in and out of toolbelts with barely a thought. Knives get the strongest reactions though :D .

Allyourblood, I appreciate the kind comments.
I have found most of the officers in this area to be very pro gun, and knife.
the sheriffs dept actually puts on our concealed carry courses free of charge.

Actually I used to be way more into watches than knives, but it turned out to be to "%## expensive!
Here's a link to my old and somewhat more watch oriented homepage:

thanks for the extra link. i had the same thing, with me it started with watches, was very expensive hobby, so i stuck with my fortis cosmonauts and called it quits, then went over to the knives for my obsessive fix :D

PS. man, those Anso's are awesome! i'm a spyderco-fan, so i really like those folders. might just get me a Kaos someday.......,that is, if Jens can modify the handle so it can be opened with the hole with the left hand as well. i wonder also what diameter the holes are, do you have any idea? i think i'd order one with 15mm hole :)
