Let's play a guessing game....

Ryan Sumner has been crowned winner with the answer of a stainless Opinel No6 in walnut. Thanks for playing! :D

 Winner! The answer is an Opinel No6 Stainless Walnut! :applouse: Good job. It should be coming in the mail today. I'm excited.

Enjoy the knife, I own a #6 in carbon steel, beech wood and well it does't suit my tastes for some reason. It is an honorary favorite though due to how freaking good it performs while cutting cardboard which is one of my main things I do with a knife.

Thanks jmflem for doing the contest! It was interesting to use a bit of knife knowledge to narrow down from such a large group of knives. (there are quite a few small, sub $50 folders on the market :D) I think I got a tad lucky in guessing it so quickly. Before I read any replies I had guessed either a Case chestnut peanut, or a #6 walnut Opinel.

These are pics of my Opinel collection so far (short one paring knife in the kitchen) and also my modified #6 walnut Opinel. I have to admit to carrying the #7 Carbon more often nowadays, mostly as my food knife.

I've already done some mods to my No6 myself. I rounded off the end, took away some wood near the nail nick for easier opening, filed the tip down some for more of a drop point shape, added a lanyard hole (this came out a little sloppy since I didn't have access to a drill press), and refinished the handle with some oil. I'm considering some more mods, maybe I'll take a shot at mirror polishing the blade or something. I'll have to take some pics and upload them. I carried it at work today and it's quite a difference from my usual carry of a RAT1 :p! I like the knife, but I probably won't be carrying it that often. I'm thinking I might try a Spyderco DF2 G10 for EDC.

And may I ask why you removed the locking collar on your No6? Just curious.

There are a couple of reasons. The first is the legality standpoint, as a non locking folder is easier to explain away than a locking one is. (Australia is a tad ridiculous with its knife laws).
The second reason is that the locking ring sort of gets in the way. When I pull my knife out of my pocket I want to be ably to open it without having to make sure it's unlocked.
The third is that it is even lighter and simpler than before! I tried snugging up the pivots a bit on my #6 and #7 so they won't open in my pocket.
I use my #6 and #7 almost exclusively as food knives nowadays, although they both started out as wood carvers/ farm
Knives.

Okay. I figured it had to do something with laws. I did not realize you were from Australia!
