....and then this, uh, friend noticed that my his knife was rusting under the scales. What sort of remedy might you suggest to me him that might prevent this from getting worse or happening again, given that the coating is already off under my his micarta? The knife in question (there are others that will need to be addressed as well) is a BK-12:

Now this friend already feels like a dumba$$ and has addressed the rust, but suggestions would be appreciated for what to do next to make sure it doesn't get worse and or happen again. Bear in mind my his backyard is filled with saltwater, and corrosion happens in our neighborhood to ANY exposed metal. I He doesn't want to remove the scales after every use, either. Please help me him keep his Beckers rust free with your knowledge. I know I'll appreciate it, since I'm the one that does all the maintenance on these his knives. Man, what a bonehead.

↑↑Both are great answers. Maybe even Duracote it. I've heard that its pretty durable and would definitely hold up well and prevent any future rust.

What was said above...kamar clear coat or nail polish works just fine.tell "your" friend that "he" is not that stupid...shit happen

Spray paint the whole knife pink and let the rust know he's such a confident man that he can carry it off.

Clear-coating it certainly won't hurt anything.

Get you sheet of thin neoprene gasket material. Epoxy it to the underside of the scales and trim off the extra with a razor blade. Poke holes for the bolts. When you put the scales back on and tighten the bolts, the tang will be sealed very nicely.

Overnight your, er, his knife to a very dry climate STAT. I suggest southern California, and by strange coincidence, .... I know someone in that general vicinty who would be willing to step up to the plate and help you, er, him out by caretaking for your, er, his knife.

I'd say just leave the coating on beneath the sc....Oh, you said completely :D. Some people, sheesh!
...

...

To be quite honest, I did that to my 14 as well. Spray painted the handle black again beneath the scales, but it starts to flake off after some time. I might have to try the nail polish thingy as well.

Use it on a ham. Then you'll have some sliced ham, and you can store the knife in the remainder of it. Hammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Still looks good to me.

I expected something more along the lines of this.....

Mine's "customized" wanna trade??? LMAO

:D

As some others have said, Krylon or another rust inhibiting paint would probably do the job.
If the knife is frequently exposed to saltwater their may be a marine paint/coating that would work even better.
Someone mentioned DuraCoat, which made me think of Cerakote (but that would probably require more $$ than you want to spend though).
I would just try one of the cheaper solutions first. You can always remove it and try something else later without to much work/$$.

turtle wax should do it too.
wax on, wax off.

phosphoric acid

rustoleum rust reformer

cold / hot blue

parkerize it :D

it's the future

It looks ruined to me. Can't believe your friend would do something so dumb. I'll take the knife off your hands since it may still be serviceable. haha

But really, Lovely looking 12 there. Man I love those blades.

I have tried all kinds of stuff. I usually don't strip under the handles but I have made that mistake a few times. I'm not one for the clear paint or sealer, Though I have considered it before.

I usually just oil it real good. Sometimes I put a bunch of vaseline on the steel and in the cutouts of the tang. Not my favorite method but it works. I also have a bee's wax and I believe almond oil or something mixture I made a while ago that has a nice viscosity to it. That works really well for me. I have even melted straight bee's wax on before, however, I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks for all the great recommendations, friends. I'll be sure to try, erm, I mean, pass them along to my...friend. I like the neoprene idea for my 15, JT - it needs a little thicker handle anyway, and I just noticed some rust forming on it. Gotta nip it in the bud so I don't end up like my friend.

This was what I decided to do with MY 12, yeah, you knew it all along anyway. BTW, Rustoleum Rust Inhibitor is NOT paint; it's basically WD-40 (smells like it, anyway). Used Rustoleum Rust Convertor (per Bladite's suggestion, after cleaning off the Rust Inhibitor) and put the Micart back on.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions; next up I'll be using some rubber/shower pan liner to make liners for my 15, since it's my fishing pack knife and spends some time near saltwater.
