Let's see how you burn the midnight oil.......

Jake, the grinder is looking awesome!!!

Patrice, yes people work during the day. Hell, if I'm not sleeping I'm working. Period! :D

Stan, you're totally wrong. We would absolutely love to see some pics of you drooling!

Nick, you're right......midnight oil should really be called just plain oil, because I'm burning in whenever I can! ;)

Hey buddy,
That is another one of these:

It's my new Ness-Mac. I got some good feedback from the prototype, so I've got some more in the works. Thanks!!

I love it, I have been using a similar handle shape lately it's simple and difficult to improve. Great thread by the way. Being in the garage after the wife and kids are in bed really hit home with me. I know the feeling.

Thanks brother! Glad you can relate. That's the only way I make progress in this biz!!:D

LOL, Carl one of these days we should get together! Sorry, but this one was headed forty miles in the opposite direction of you:D

Actually it is 46 miles, but you shouldn't have. :D

I do hand sanding and such. Sharpening on water stones is quiet, but at that time of night too cold, anywhere I'd use them at.

Jonny, your shop is still WAY too damn clean buddy :D

Hey, come next spring I'll have permanent work area in my garage, I'll probably start late night work just like the rest of you guys haha

I may be in CA during the summer for a little trip, we should make sure we can meet up and grab a beer

I only get late nights to work in the shop...But it is detached so i forge and grind until i am to frozen lol. I would say that 95% of my shop work is done after 11pm here....

I usually do my heat treating late at night. I bet the neighbors would think I'm nuts if they happened to look out the window at 3am and saw me pulling red hot blades out of the oven in my pajamas :) If I'm tired I just set the alarm on my phone to go off every two hours so I can sleep during the temper cycles.

Right now I've got five blades about to hit the dry ice and alcohol bath after the snap temper and in the down time I'm filing a stupid chevron plunge on a fighter :(

Nice Jason!:D

I just got in from the shop myself. Earlier I got some bevels ground, but later when the kids went to bed I got back into quiet mode. Glued up some more laminated handles, did some handle fitting to blade tangs, drilled more holes in some tangs, anything to keep busy until my eyes get heavy!

Most of my work happens after dark too.
Noise outside of the house isn't an issue. At least not yet! Inside the house I haven't had any complaints either, except for the smell of burning wood and handle materials when my blades or belts are worn. The lady of the house seems to like the noise of industry after all the computer-sitting that goes on around here. The shop is in the basement and the bedrooms on the second floor. In fact dust is the big problem. I can keep it out of my lungs, but it's on everything else.
