Lets see opinels - Pic Thread

is it easy to swap a carbon blade into one of the more premium wooden handles?? take any special tools? I'd love to throw my carbon blade into a bit prettier handle, and then test out their stainless in my plain jane handle while I'm at it.

love my #6

It's not that hard to do. Pop the lock ring off and grind the head off the pivot pin and punch it out . I used a nail for a replacement pin but you have to peen the heads on both sides the same size and shapes as the original pin because the lock ring slides on the head of the peened pin. If the head is a bit narrow it allows the lock to move towards the blade and leaves a bit of a gap.

Best regards

Here's my trusty 06, that sports a vinegar patina. I enjoy mine bone stock, but then again I'm not the most creative....

Pics of my number 8 I won in a give away from Pete. I modded it a little and it sits in the window sill of my kitchen always ready for action. I will take a current pic of it soon.

Cool little buggers, aren't they? For me, the handle works really well-- good girth to grasp up front, the "tail" curving against my palm and into my fingers. The blade's a mini-powerhouse as well.

Nice pick-up. :)

Yes it is, I did champer the inside edges of the handle opening as they were crisp to the touch, now they are smooth and comfortable, as well as the spine of the blade had some sharpness to it, since it is a stainless and probably wouldn't fire strike well anyways, I sanded those corners down too, safer in the pocket now. The braided leather lanyard helps to draw the knife from they pocket and adds a little bit to it's looks.

A very nice handy tool to have around for not a lot of money!

My #9 workhorse, this knife had been really put to the test, and is a real worker, I never set out to mod it, it just evolved,
slight recurve and EO.

Pete, I'm going to apologize in advance.
Do you ever cut your, umm, buttocks, when unsheathing your knife (reference the first picture)....I couldn't resist.

Back on topic: does anyone know the significance of the two fingers pointing to the sideways crown?

I just end up losing my loincloth :-)

"Crowned Hand"
In 1565 King Charles IX of France had ordered every master knife-maker to place an emblem on his products to guarantee their origin and quality. “In order to prevent counterfeits, the stamps had to be registered in a ‘safe place’, in the Police Lieutenant’s registry for Paris , at the guild headquarters or the home of the oldest Master or Juror for knife-making centers. They had to be stamped on a slab of copper, lead or silver, as proof of registration and in order to keep an imprint in the event of dispute”. Respecting this tradition, Joseph Opinel chose as his emblem "The Crowned Hand”. This right hand, known as a hand raised in blessing, with three fingers straight and two fingers folded, figures on the coat of arms of the town of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne . "A silver hand raised in blessing, on an azure background, clad in the same". Since the 6th century, the cathedral has housed a shrine, where the faithful may worship, containing three fingers from the hand of Saint John the Baptist, brought back from Alexandria in Egypt by a young girl from Maurienne, named Thecla. The crown placed above the hand recalls the fact that the Savoie region was once a Duchy.

My first and only Opinel #8 carbon. It definitely won't be my last. I love this thing. Can't really see the nicely forming patina in the pic.

Some nice ones in here.

Wanted to show you guys an up close pic of my latest purchase, they're in my group pic but cant really see em well.

Probably promotional items from Bose for the 92 albertville winter olympics, nothing special that I know of happened during these winter games but they are unique knives for my collection none the less. They are made from walnut, SS blades(a bit of staining on them though) and have a metal olympic inlay.

Don't have photos but just wanted to list the Opinel knives I got all this month:

Opinel No. 8 with Ebony handles and Inox blade
Opinel No. 8 Carbone
Opinel No. 8 with Bubinga handles and Inox blade
Opinel No. 6 Carbone
Opinel No. 8 Slim with Olive wood handles and Inox blade

I got three different sheaths to compliment/fit these new knives. Everyone except the No. 8 with Ebony handles are engraved with my name and monagram. The No. 8 with Ebony handles is staying in my safe for now. The other knives are in my EDC rotational lineup. I am so fortuanate to be able to acquire and enjoy this new knives.

I have a few. One or two in special wood, one reproduction of the original, a set of ten, a #14, and the garden knife. Only a couple of pictures though.
