I don't believe the broad width differences matter so much as some punches had to fit into smaller Frames - but still the same Style of punch- I think simply narrowed down to suit the Frame.

So upon seeing other knives that sport this Punch - I think- "Aha" - did Robeson sell the Punches to other Factories" ? it would be so great to have Invoices from Cutler companies to validate things like this.

This one still gets me, the Punch I have never seen before- and I have looked and looked and looked but have not found anything similar, If anyone does spot a punch on another knife like this I would be MOST grateful.
This HJ- is one that I like very much - it's a Primble - so someone made this HJ for Primble- Who? Who made this Knife?

In carrying on with the search, I have accepted that it may take several Years to find who made this HJ for Primble, I have seen an early I*XL Wostenholm HJ with a similar Punch that was very much hollowed out yet not quite as Broad in Width - the vast hollowing out ran the whole way to the Punches Tang, Primbles in the earlier days did use Wostenholm - but at what period I am not 100% sure, if it was during the India Steel Works era?

Bernard has the India Steel Works circa 1890 - 1940 period, and the possibility of either USA or German manufacture - so a massive expanse of Cutler History / Cutlers to be explored there.
I have also seen that of the LF& C's that the Punches are Hollowed out as such- but still yet again the halfway ending is not existent on these punches either, and not as Broad as this India Steel Works Punch.

Duncan, outstanding detective work going on! The uncommoness(?) of the Punch seems like a perfect candidate for a fellow who’s been known to have some made-hint hint;).
Thanks, Neal

Thank you Neal - and Charlie :)
Neal you are right - Charlie has an immense amount of knowledge- it's funny as Charlie must smack his head against the Keyboard at times when I am trying to work things out and put it out there
There's lots to look at in a knife- I never knew just how much and I am 100% sure I still dont know.
There's Time!

Speaking of big Ground out Punches, one of my oldest and most loved ( just check out the gorgeous Stag & you'll see why......)ex C. Campagna

Big and Broad still ready to out work any young fella!

Just to confuse one just that little more other Punches are so so similar - are they the same - but have a wee tweak to make them different...

Fox Cutlery - with a similar Punch- slightly curved face on this one... ( there is another Fox HJ I own with a different Punch )

So - Utica could have supplied or made these HJ's - I will search some more in this later- what I find I dont know - Charlie do you Know my friend?

Another Question to waynorth waynorth - Charlie- That stunning Case HJ of yours kind Sir raises Questions as well as many complimentary comments.....

Questions about your Case HJ....
a, Case obtained Punches from Robeson?
b, Robeson contract made this for Case? Bone looks like Case though....
c, Is it actually a Robeson Punch? - I am thinking it is?

1)From the top, HJ-1, Teardrop from Queen/Bill. These had 4 slight variations of Jigged Bone, and a small handful of "one of a kinds", a few of which Dave owns.
2)Then HJ-2, in Jigged bone and Ebony, and 2 stags were produced also.
Regular Jack from Queen/Bill.
3)HJ-3, Jigged Bone, Ebony, Equal ender. Some Stags, and some Celluloids, a few of which deteriorated. . . .sigh. Nice knives though!
4) HJ-4 marked the move to GEC. Done on their Big Cigar pattern, only a dozen of each were made. The only run with 2 blade options, a Spear with Ebony, and a clip with Stag.

What year was the HJ-3 made and what blade steel did Queen use on it?
I just bought one from Campbellclanman and was curious about it. It's a very well made knife. I like it quite a bit.

The HJ-1 was the only stainless - 440-c.:) The rest were, and have been 1095 Carbon.
The HJ-3 was an equal-ender; Queen finished them up in 2006, just after Bill left to open Great Eastern Cutlery!! Queen was in a bind so I waited a while for them!!

Duncan, I am sorry I missed all these great punch questions!! BF has gotten too fast for me!!
J. Schatt or someone at Schatt designed that laminated Schatt punch, borrowing heavily from
the previous expired patent by NYK!! The Utica zig-zag punch was called the "lightning punch"
when I was a knife whipper-snapper!! It was stamped!!
The matchstriker pull was always Utica. I don't know whether they made whole knives for others or just the punches - maybe a little of both like Empire did.
I don't know how Case got into the Robeson - Case used several different punches over the years!!

Charlie thank you for coming back to me, yes the road down the Punches does leave one with more Questions than Answers, the only thing that could ever put these questions to rest would be Factory / Cutler Invoices made out to other Factories / Cutlers for either the build of complete Knives or the Supply of Punches.
You cant blame someone for having a go at copying New Yorks amazing Laminated Punch!
I suspect in many cases the supply of punches, when I see yours and Erics HJ's ( New York ) with say a punch that is a Robeson- the rest of the knife is so undoubtedly New York that one could assume it was a brought-in Punch from another firm and assembled in the NY Factory.
I see that Match-strike pull on a few Punches, Winchester from memory? Fox cutlery and there were some other examples -I would have to look back.
Most Intriguing that's for sure, and it certainly keeps my hunger going for this pattern.
