I'm on the waiting list for my first custom slipjoint and am leaning towards getting it made with micarta handles. The problem is micarta, like jigged bone, is a very varied material. I'm not entirely sure of the options available. For those of you with micarta handled knives, can you please post pictures of them if at all possible?

Not strictly Micarta but similar and you can get multi layered micarta as well

I would not rule out G-10

And also, for synthetics,I would not rule out carbon fiber, either,it is very strong, light & real scratch resistant,as well as grippy w/ wet

Can we try to honor the OP's request so that we don't steer too far off course (as happened to his last thread)? Thanks.

This picture shows the same Hampton above, after time & use It has takn on a bit of a different look
If you look close, the small fixed blade knife with canvas, has a bit of color variation in the micarta,I've seen this, too.Just something to keep in mind (the lanyard bead on that kife is red micarta  )

Notice the tighter finer look (canvas grain)on this Reese Bose

That jigged micarta above that Elliott posted,by Ken Erickson, looks so much like bone . What a fantastic job. There are a few makers doing a fine job with that & I think it's a great look on a slipjoint, with the performance of the man made material

Also,I have seen older brown canvas that I always thought would look great on a slipjoint. I may have a picture of this on a fixed blade,if you'd like to see it
Hope I helped & god luck choosing,it can drive you knife - nuts! :D

Thanks, Todd. That was my first from Ken and a great knife in every respect.:thumbup:

This is great, thanks for all the pics! I wonder why no one started a micarta thread until now.

Is it just me, or are there different varieties of ivory micarta? Blues' K.R. Johnson soddie, VCM3's Kerry Hampton swayback, and Ford's Ray Cover shadow trapper all have ivory micarta knives, but the ivory micarta looks different in all of them. Is it the lighting or are they different types?

kamagong,I think there are variations in micarta, depending on who made it.

There was a thread on micarta knives, probably more than one, too.

There have been micarta threads before, Christian, as I recall.

I'm sure that the ivory paper micarta has different attributes based upon manufacturer and the age of the material. Also, as you mentioned, the lighting and imaging will make a difference as well.

EDITED TO ADD:

Looks like Vince had the answer covered.

Ivory Micarta also varies in appearance because of how it was finished by the maker. Ray Cover uses old Westinghouse Ivory Paper Micarta on all of his Ivory Micarta knives and it yellows over time. Ray estimates 10 years.

Nice one JB,kamagong ,green linen is another gorgeous one
LarryM posted another great pic in this forum of a Dowell trapper style with it.
