I figured since most knives discussed here are older, the steel is more of a challenge for most. Let's see what everyone uses and hear some techniques! I'll be posting more pix of others later. So this is my old school Smith's tri hone Arkansas stones. And my leather strop, produces some crazy sharp knives every time.

I've found if you finish on the fine stone, then strop to a mirror edge then use the fine a lil more ... well it makes a nasty edge.

Here is what I mostly use. At 12 o'clock is a (1980's) Norton IM 313 tri-hone, at 3 o'clock is a Norton (1980's)IB8 2X8" combination stone in coarse/fine India. At 6 o'clock is my 3 grit strop, at 9 o'clock is a Norton (1970's) 2x6" combination coarse/ fine India. DM

My old setup was a combination course and fine carborundum stone, and a 1000 grit ceramic stone.

My current setup is
325 Buck diamond benchstone
750 Buck diamond benchstone
1000 ceramic stone

both setups cut any steel very quickly, but the new setup is soooo much cleaner!!

Someday, I may add a strop or 2

Whhhhaatt?! My local nappa has a rather large one I've been eyeballing. .. but it's community use only...

Whoops.... I made a mistake..... it was $7.... :D

use search words "1000 grit ceramic stone" on the big auction site, and you will easily find them.
Smith's brand.....

I love that stone, more often than not, I just give a blade a few passes on it, and it touches them up nicely :)

Wise guy with the 7 dollar heh lol

I can't find anything on the net on my old stones I pictured. I know there a better quality and larger than the ones they sell now. I'd like to know the actual grit on them.

Yes, my 313 Tri-hone has a reservoir in the bottom to hold oil. I use it to catch the residual oil coming off the stone. The 3 stones are 2.5X11.5".
The grit of ceramic stones are difficult to determine. As they work toward finer. DM

This is Buck's first sharpening stone. The 101 carborundum stone came out in 1961 with a glued on label over this box. This material worked very well on 440C steel. DM

Does that ceramic stone put a mirror edge on the blade? I always assumed that ceramic stones were a much higher grit?
