If the knives had serial numbers and you could order sheaths numbered to match, that would be a nice option but otherwise it wouldn’t matter much to me.

Aside from tacking for a warranty issue or keeping a count, what would be the reason?

well, I don't have a reason to do it, other than just for assembly- each side is matched, and the welt is mated up individually so they are all numbered on the inside for that reason. There are 14 in this run, so maybe it's a value added thing that people like? I honestly don't know, but they are kind of a premium handmade product, (as opposed to kydex- no offence intended to makers of kydex sheaths) and maybe exclusivity is important?
