Lets see your CPM S110V Mules

I just drilled the holes in the handles. I hope to have it finished by tomorrow night; I will update this post.

She's all glued up with turquoise colored box elder scales and orange liners. Two steel Corby bolts for the pins. If the weather will permit, I'm going to start grinding/shaping today. I'll have the finished product here in a few days (I hope). I love this 110 Mule. The finish on the steel is outstanding.

Well, I have sad news. :( If you look right above the forefinger groove you can see a circular shape. Well that is a knot which turned out to include a huge fissure underneath. So the scale was ruined! So, I'm back to the drawing board on this one. I have a variety of scale materials, pins, and liners coming in this week so I'll come up with a new concept and post later.

I have posted these on some of the other threads but here is my S110V with some leather.

Then another member's S110V and K390, and then you can see the differences of the handles and thicknesses between some of them.

The black g10 and toxic liner is an Elmax Mule. I have some pics of that if you guys want to see those as well.

Here's my finished S110V. Brown/gold Box Elder scales with brick red and lime green liners. Hey Brian, I like the black and the tan g10 knives above. I have something like that in mind for my next project. Now if I only had the time...:p

Looks awesome. What kind of tube/pin did you use in the back? I have seen those on some knives but never came across them, so I can't try it.

-Brian-

Thanks Brian. The lanyard tube is my own making. It is a 1/4" steel tube inside a Garolite 5/16" tube which is inside a 3/8" steel tube. The Garolite was found at Usaknifemaker. I got the one with 5/16 Outside Dimension and 1/4" Inside Dimension. They all fit inside of each other and it is something different. I got the inspiration from Andy Roy with Fiddleback Forge.

Got some major work done tonight! A surgery and some other down time got in the way, but I'm back on the road to S110V sweetness now.

Here I have my MT18 clamped, letting the epoxy cure on the scales and tang, along with the ti pins.

The scales are 1/8" black micarta epoxied to 3/16" white juma (I did this a few weeks ago). Pins are 3/16" 6AL-4V Titanium.

I was shocked at how bright the sparks from titanium are! They are a very brilliant white, very different from carbon steel. More to come in a few days!

Newb question here, actually 2.

Do you sand the handles down to final form during the final step? After they are permanently on?
Also, what do you use to cut/chop the excess titanium off with?

dishcore,
I look forward to seeing the finished knife. What is white juma?

Juma is a synthetic material, it comes in a couple different colors. BF member Keyman did a few handles with it a while back and I thought it would be a cool contrast with black micarta.

Looking forward to it.

Thanks, man!

Yep, I use a bench grinder with a stone wheel on it to take most of the material off, then do the fine tuning with files and sandpaper after they are permanently attached. For the Ti pins, i'll use a portable grinder with a cut-off wheel to get them close to the scale (not too close - the heat will scorch the juma / micarta - thanks weatherman) and then files / sandpaper for the rest.

The only edge that I shape close to finishing size (prior to attachment) is the leading edge that is near the choil, it's really difficult to get it down to size after they're attached for life.

Good plan! Save the scarp pins you can make at least 2 more knifes with that stuff!

Thought I would resurrect this thread since there is talk of a new mule team in the works. Nobody but the folks in Golden really know what the next will be, so we will see I guess!

Also, I had to drag the thread up to see if anyone else did handles for their MT18 yet. Im just about finished with mine!

Excellent work!

I'd love to know where you got the hardware. I'd like to make some scales for my various Mules but would like them removable. Any help?

The fastener is a chain-ring bolt. USAknifemaker has them in a few sizes.

So I got my MT18 as finished as I'm going to ever get it!

1/8" Black micarta and 3/16" white juma "composite stack" Pinned with 3/16 titanium pins.
