Hey everyone,

Here's my first attempt at a 'real' PSK. Until now, I just had a lot of camping gear that I carried around all the time.

Please ask questions, offer alternatives, additions, etc. All items (except for the iodine and the water purifying straw) I have successfully tested and used as of Jan 2007 in Michigan (in nasty ass weather, I might add)

NO offense if you already know all the uses for these items (cause I dont want to come off like a know-it-all), but I think I have a few ideas that you might not have thought of. Vise versa, I hope to learn from you

Thanks!

PSK
- paper w/ table of contents
- several feet of aluminum foil, folded
- 4ft 1/4 inch surgical tubing w/ jute twine inside (ask why!)
- 1" x 3.5" suede leather
- fishing kit film canister: 4 trial size dental floss spools w/o dispenser (12yds ea.) asst. hooks, needles, safety pin, dry cotton balls
- 4 vicodin, vacuum sealed
- bic pen wrapped in duct & electrical tape, and inside are tightly packed magnesium shavings, silicone sealed.
- button compass
- space blanket
- 10 x 10 ft of .5mil painters tarp (clear)
- microlight flashlight (modded)
- sheffield multi-tool (about the size of a LM Micra)
- eyedrop bottle with deet bug repellant
- 55 ft of 24ga brass wire
- tinder kit canister: 8 cotton balls soaked in neosporin
- firesteel w/ 3 different blade pattern jigsaw blades as strikers and saws (modded...ask how & why!)
- 'fresnel' style magnifyer in a sleeve
- 2 relighting "trick" birthday candles
- home made bicycle inner tube pouch (ask why!) w/ 6 varnish sealed matches, and a mini BIC with match striker glued on (all silicone sealed shut)
- water purifying straw (McNett Frontier Emergency Water Filter)
- iodine based water purification tablets

As you can see, it's a little overboard in the fire making department, because I feel that fire is life & death, everything else can be gotten or brought with - just a philosophy - tell me what you think!

A few quick suggestions, your kit lacks components for signaling - might consider a mirror and a whistle. I would also include some paracord and tinfoil. And of course a good knife.

Seems to me to be pretty spot on.

I would add some spyder wire and some mono, depending on where you are. If you only have one safety pin I would add more and different sizes, super glue gel, BC powders.

Man the list is endless, once you get to where you are at I think it comes down mostly to personal preference. Chris

thanks , chris & baron 1999

good idea about the mirror, I have been wanting to get one with a sighting hole, but I havent gotten it yet. maybe soon.

I forgot to mention that I always have on me a whistle, a micro flashlight, a tiny zippo type fuel tank & a BSB Hotspark on my keychain, and of course my LM wave and a 2-3 inch folder. Zippo in my pocket, even though I quit smoking 6 years ago, and if i'm feelin sassy, a modded chain saw blade fits nicely in a zippo belt holster.

It looks good overall.
Not being critical, or indicating a problem, but.....
Out of curiosity, what size container/pouch does this fit into?

My personal requirement, (for myself), is that it has to be easily carried, such as on a belt loop, affixed to knife sheath, or similar.

The "tricky" B-day candles is a new idea...hadn't heard that one before, but, makes some sense.

it isnt a minimalist, or altoids tin type kit, thats for sure

it takes up about 1/2 of a hip pouch - I found one that has 2 compartments about the same size and a third small one. pretty tough nylon, and I camp dried it. All the stuff is inside a clear plastic bag, and the surgical tube wraps around it I have worn it now on a couple of winter hikes (short 4 or 5 miles) and I really dont seem to mind it at all.

So I guess this is may be like a hybrid between a bug out bag and a survival kit. Anyways, it's still in the testing phase - it could definately shed a little weight as there is quite a bit of redundancy.

oh one more thing, I always wear tall boots in the field, and I use paracord for boot laces, also, all my zipper pulls are paracord key fobs.

Ok, heres my PSK

I would add some first aid items,a s/steel cup or bowl to boil water in,a condom,a folding saw, some carbohydrate bars and maybe some plastic ties.
Overall a pretty good kit you have and I agree on your point about fire starting !!!

wheres you knife steve?
And why to you have surgical tubing with jute twine in it?

I'm with SkunkWerx, a PSK in my mind is determined largely by the size of pouch you feel like carrying. digicam's look pretty good to me, personally I would sneak a few single-edge utility knife, or razor blades in there just because. Not to be a know-it-all like you said, but I hope that eyedrop bottle full of DEET is clearly marked :) How did you seal up the inner tube for the matches BIC and striker pad? I like that idea a lot. Moderation in pursuit of fire is no virtue. (my apolpgies to Mr. Goldwater.)

Okay Steve, WHY?

thanks :)

the tubing is the stuff they use in slingshots and spearguns. good also for a drinking straw. It keeps jute twine dry which is good for lashing, and for tinder. the twine inside also reinforces the tubing to use as a bungee cord.

the innertube pouch is crudely sewn together, and then glued together with silicone caulk. as you know, the innertube when shredded burns pretty well, and the whole think is waterproof.
