It also saved them a lot of finish work, since they could leave most of the springs rough. Only the tabs at each end show, so I'm sure that is the only parts that are sanded smooth.
 
The frame and bolsters are all one piece of aluminum. A tab at the tail of the steel spring is inserted into a slot in the frame, the blade is placed on top of the spring and pressed down and the blade is pinned in place. Kind of odd, but it works.

Now that I've bothered to think (that doesn't happen often) that "tab" at the butt end is actually more of a hook. The spring is inserted from the inside and the end rests on a step on the hole in the frame. That holds the end of the spring while the blade tang pushes down the other end of the leaf spring. Not only does it save finish work, there is no pin hole through the center of the spring to weaken it. They used the same system on the Big Chief.
