After seeing Pitdogs post, I'd like to see sawbacks people have. I'm a big fan of this design but don't have one currently.

Aitor has the best sawback I've seen... Most sawbacks don't appear to be actually designed for use, both the Aitor JK1 and JK2 have more serious sawbacks.. I agree with KGD's assessment with regard to thickness being a problem..

This is kind of an interesting approach to providing a saw within a FB:

The saw blade locks into the handle like the guthook. The saw actually works fairly well...

I had a quick look at the review of the new TOPS Punisher knife in Tactical knives mag and that saw back looked quite effective !

I only have this little Ontario.

I've had a couple USAF pilot's knives over the years. The "sawback" is definitely not a saw, but it does make nice square notches in wood. There's been so much written about the pointlessness of trying to turn a knife into a saw that I won't bore you with it further.

I own several old Jimmy Lile knives and heard relatively good things about his split sawback design. They feel pretty sharp but I never tested or bought one. My only sawback is an '80s vintage hollow handle. Not a total POS but the saw is very mediocre.

If someone could convince Silky or Bahco to put out a sawback knife, I might try it.:D

I have this Taylor Extreme Survival. The Sawback on it will not cut anything.

I don't have any now, but I had some nice ones back in the day. Like a Lile Sly 2, I wish I would have held onto that one.

My favorite sawback was the Camillus KABAR style knife, with combo edge and sawback teeth that I had. I wish I would have kept one of those (had two).

I'm not crazy about saw backs. Interferes with batoning and I've never seen one work well. Plus, when I choke up on a blade (grabbing the spine to work the point), I don't want a saw eating into my palm. The saw on a SAK works great!

Pffff.... I have that very same... knife?... and I would gladly trade it for a bunch of ferro rods, small folder, small fixed blade or anything actually usefull for something.

Too thick to cut anything. Edge had to be thinned out a lot. Heavy as a brick but not a good chopper either due to the thick grind. Steel seems to be soft and doesn't hold an edge at all. Sawback clogs on the first try and teeth are not set. They dull fairly easy as well.

It does a fair job at vicious battonning and excels at digging holes for setting up poles when building stuff... But that's about it.

Anyone in need of an Ontario SP8?

i always thought that the sawbacks were for cutting through the fibreglass or aluminium sheet on the outside of planes when a pilot was "downed" or for nothcing sticks to make snapping them easier. Still not really something i have any use for, but useful in the right situation i suppose

I have also used them to make notches for traps etc.

My big thing with sawbacks is the possibility to slip of the handle and getting a handful of blade.

ive got a couple hollow-handle "survival" knives that have sawbacks :D
