Let's Take a Vote! Bigger Harpy or Bust!

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a big harpy. Personally, I don't mind the FRN - my Endura sure has taken a beating, and had no problems. I wonder if it's possible to just use the exact same handle as the endura - thus lowering the production costs. Keep it simple with a serrated edge only, and BAM: instant big seller with a cost similar to other FRN clipits.

It would have to have a VERY PC name - thus keeping Spyderco out of trouble.

It sure would be neat. I love my harpy, but would like one with a little more of a handle. G10 is nice, but I'll take FRN (keeps the weight down). It seems like its been a while since spyderco has introduced a good, simple low cost clipit model.

Me fail english? That's unpossible!

WOW! my post from almost a year ago is still floating around. I finally got a Matriarch, but I still want a bigger G 10 Harpy. Lets keep going on this. I know Spyderco can make it! Hell Yes!!!!!!!

Sal, how about a G-10 version for the fourmites, either way I will buy both. BTW my hawkbill facination is your fault, in answering a question I had posted, thanks. I really luv the high quality feel and rock solid lock up of my G-10 Harpy.

But I also carry a plastic handle, version with metal clip, and I'm currently looking for a old plastic clip version.

In VG-10? If so, then yes yes yes!

Fine! Stretch-Merlin's done both plain & serrated...I could be convinced to buy.

Can't believe how long this thread is lingering on. Provided perhaps the only negative vote.

To repeat myself and add a bit, am not a fan of hawkbills. Doubt will ever buy 1, and if I do, it will be the Cricket. 4 or 5 models is a great plenty, particularly when some awfully good knives are biting the dust, and production of this would presumably prevent introduction of something genuinely new, possibly exciting, and perhaps more useful. Heck, even at fancy dinners/restaurants, you can get by with 2 forks, and one wine glass. Would much prefer to see a new fixed blade/neck knife/whatever, instead of another hawkbill, distinguished from the others only by a minor size difference. Come on gang, get a grip!

4" Harpy - sign me in!
Will it be MBC collaboration with same lady who has designed LadyHawk fo MOD or some in-house design?
Anyway 4" hawkbill made of CPM440V with G-10 handles and compression lock (or Chinook like lockback) will be the ruler!
I'll buy at least two even if price will be about 200$.

I'm down for a larger Harpy- I just last week picked up a g-10 serrated harpy, and have been using it for edc since then.

However, perhaps something like black micarta for handles would be better; the g-10 is making a mess of my pants pocket where I clip the knife, and that wouldn't do my business suits much good.

As far as an frn handle is concerned: only if the blade is the same thickness as the g-10 model. I bought the frn Merlin, then played with it while I was driving home from the knife store- I turned around and returned to the store, and exchanged the frn for the g-10 model. The frn's blade was too thin, and it had an undesireable amount of blade play that I hadn't noticed (ie- checked for) in the store.

I never would have been happy with it, and don't at all regret spending the extra money for the g-10 model- it's much more solid all around.

Now, to find a stainless steel model...

I'm not familiar with G-10, so can you elaborate on what it's doing to your pants pocket?

Thanks

Dave.

Hi, Dave-
G-10 normally has a slightly rough texture to it. This provides a good gripping surface, but causes the handle to act like sandpaper, slightly fraying the material of the pants pocket when you remove/insert the knife as the handle rubs against it. This isn't so bad with jeans, but with a $300 suit...

'in Spyderco I trust'

Finally got around to this thread...

I think I'm only the second or third, but I have to vote "no."

I carry a hawkbill daily; two of the three Spydies I currently own have curved blades (the other is the Cricket (which isn't really a hawkbill, is it?)) -- and I just can't understand what niche you'd be filling with a bigger Harpy.

The Harpy (and the Merlin) is plenty big enough for its intended purposes (a fishing knife, primarily for cutting rope, if I remember correctly) and if you're looking at the self-defense angle, just go ahead and get a Civilian or a Matriarch. They're not Hawkbills, but they've got all the same advantages, especially considering that a 4 inch Hawkbill would be a little dodgy legally. ("Now, your honor, if the knife is designed for cutting rope, why did they need to make it so big??")

I say definitely go with G-10. My G-10 Harpy is a complete workhorse and I wouldn't want anything less in a bigger one. I'd even prefer double liners, even though my single-linered G-10 Harpy is as sturdy as anything.

The niche it would fill? Capable for defense and utility. The existing Harpy works great for utility but a little bigger couldn't hurt. It would also work well for defense, but a bit bigger would help a lot. The Civvy & Matriarch are superior defensive knives, but are unsuitable for utility. This knife would work well for both. Plus, it'd be cool as hell!
