Let's talk about pocket clips

Bang on.

With that in mind, and with a CS Recon 1 [the only CS knife I happen to own] currently on page one of GKD, I have to ask, “What is their thinking?”

That pocket clip is alarmingly tight to extremely rough G10. Given the black blade, the aggressive clip point, and the name and associated logo on the blade itself, why did they make it so appalling on any pocket, let alone heavy duty, thick material, for those HSLD operators out there. Ahem.

I know it can be solved very easily, but why do that in the first place?
One advantage to the way Cold Steel sets their clips is that NOBODY needs to tighten them. This tight clip factory setting is valuable two ways. First, no irate customers complaining about knives lost from falling off pockets. Second, to loosen a clip you don’t need to unscrew it. True, if you bend it wrong you might tear out the screws, but that’s on you if you do. (First clamp the mounting end, then carefully bend the open end out by degrees.)

Ha, ha,
When a certain new racing shift mechanism hit the market long, long ago (the details of what I refer to aren't important here) it just worked like crap. Couldn't be made to work well.

THEN
I saw their magazine ad one day : blah, blah, blah . . . "For the adrenaline charged racer".

Cold Steel pocket clips are for : "The adrenaline charged knife user".
PS: I own and use and like many of their knives . . . but . . . like you said "what are they thinking ?".

Yeah, I've ran into this problem a couple times. I've always taken the clip off and tried to bend it inward to give it more tension. I almost lost a knife at work once because the clip wasn't tight enough and almost fell out of my pocket.
Also, having strong tension keeps the clip from snagging on something and bending outward. I've had this happen twice with my CRKT Two-Stage. The clip snagged on some freight at work, and bent outward about a centimeter... Then it definitely had not enough tension!

Pocket clips are in a very sorry state, especially when it comes to the custom knife world. 90% of them are absolute garbage at their primary goal of being pocket clips!

I guess this goes along with the current trend of making knives that are so thick/have such ridiculous grinds that they can barely cut.

Not too many Cold Steel knives in your collection then I'm thinking.
 :)
Exactly. Although with the CS knives I've owned (Recon series) rather than bending the clip to loosen the tension I simply sanded under the clip to reduce the pocket shredding G10. Also did this on a BM 915. Simple fix. Takes about 5 minutes.

So you guys have any specific websites or manufacturers that you know of that make aftermarket deep carry clips?

Another satisfied dude that dealt with MXG.
Lots of choices and a pleasure to deal with.

Pages and pages dedicated to simple problems as usual nobody's right; nobody's wrong. Lots of variation in options.
I'm glad this is just an exercise in social interaction. Great pastime, lots of laughs guys.
Soon these pages will drift off to the middle of nowhere in the annals of Blade Forums as another about the same problems takes its place.
Love Blade Forums! Love re-runs! Popcorn and snacks!

I use pocket clips. Sometimes they are loose sometimes they are tight. Sometimes I adjust them other times I don't. Other times I remove them all together. (Hadtah add some on topic content)

That is one reason I hate milled clips! I love bent metal clips. I have replaced all my milled clips with bent metal ones, except one or two, but those are really well designed milled clips. I have even gone as far as drillled and tapped to accommodate the new clips.

I've never had that problem ... I have had a couple odd clips that were hard on pockets because they were too tight ...

Same. All my knives are under $250 and most are under $150, and I haven't seen the loose clip issue. With a few like Cold Steel Recon, I've had the reverse problem and had to take steps like inserting some thick leather under the clip for a while to slightly loosen it.

I adjust most every knife I get due to wearing jeans most of the time. Especially with those that make contact with a frame lock. If I am not happy with the clip I usually make a low rider clip for the knife. If to tight, they really make a mess out of the pocket. I usually like to see a bit of space between the clip and the scales.

I know they're more costly to make, but I really wish the world would switch to Spyderco's wire clip. They work perfectly, they're lightweight, don't draw unwanted attention and are so minimal and neutral looking they don't clash with the look of a knife.

Not to derail this thread but I just today received 2 deep carry clips, one silver, one black, from Benchmade. Free. I just asked for them online for my new Crooked River. Pretty awesome.

Not sure if I’m gonna use the new ones since they take 2 screws and the stock clip takes 3.

I hate zt deep carry clips because they are flimsy. I dont put knives in my pockets, because Im in a wheelchair and have a handy little lap belt that I put all my knives on but still. Its not that it doesn't hold the knife okay, its that when you go to flip the knife the clip will bend and warp if you use it to anchor you fingers. Not the best match for a all titanium frame lock with a .180" thick blade. Im going to try and make my own "milled" clip soon in some scrap steel I have.
