Let's talk about the Gayle Bradley folder

Gayle lives somewhat close to me and I've had the pleasure of speaking with him at length on a couple of occasions; if you don't know, he's BIG into cutting performance, and his customs are totally works of art. That said, we've discussed his Spyderco models and his focus was on bringing the slicing ability of his big competition knives, and steel choices to the folders. The Spydie GB carries well, it's light, and it cuts very very well.

I would definitely clean with acetone, force a patina, maybe using apple cider vinegar...then recoat in TuffGlide and swipe it with a silicon rag before taking it fishing. I agree the pivot should be the spo to keep an eye on.

I think you're in for a treat.

Thanks for the good advice. I'm excited to get this one. Btw, this knife will NEVER go on the ocean with me. This is to be my normal edc, but kayak duty is reserved for the "salts".

My GB came on Friday, and its my favorite folder I have. Its just a fabulous knife all the way around.

To anyone who's forced a patina: did you disassemble and do the whole blade (did you protect the pivot and detent area) or did you just dip it as far as you could into an acidic substance?

It's wise to do the blade alone after disassembly.

Force a patina on the blade, enlarged the cutout a bit, got some scales that don't make the liners fit too proud, and its perfect for me.

So-Lo did that for me. He did the same patina on my CPM-M4 Frankenmilitary about 2 years ago that's still holding up very well, and doesnt look much different today than when I first got it. That's why I had him do the GB. I think he uses Ferric Chloride for the etch, then he does a stonewash.

I was cutting up some mackerel I caught today and all I could think was how I'd rather be using a Gayle Bradley! Hehe...I've never even held one! Talk about building expectations! I'm like a 8 yr old waiting for a new toy! I'm sure none of you can relate huh? ;).

Friday!

No idea what you're talkin' 'bout. :D

Surfingringo, shoot me a PM or email. Have a fish photo question for you.
Thanks!

Its a great knife. Bought one from the very 1st run. Picked up a 2nd a couple weeks ago.
Living a mile from the Pacific has not been an issue. But it isn't a knife I take fishing........
Am 100% certain you will like it!

I know it is not a big deal, but I would be pretty bummed about getting the version w/out Bradley's logo on it. My Stretch does not have Sal's mark on it and it has always bothered me. I love my collaborations, and knowing who the designer is and having a little bit of recognition.

Well??

Did you get it?

Did I miss your "first impressions" post somewhere?

Inquiring minds want to know! :D

That one with no logo and no Taichung seems suspicious to me. Never seen just "Taiwan" on a Spyderco...

Most of the older Spydercos lacked the city designations. Inclusion of the city of origin is a relatively recent addition.

As was stated, first-gen GBs didn't have the 'Gayle Bradley, Weatherford, TX" logo and 'Taichung' on the blade. The were ran higher in HRC (around 64 I think), and didn't have skeletonized liners.
