Let's talk about the Stockman pattern.

Well, I need a big stockman. 3.5" is too short. I have a Case medium stockman in blue bone, but want something bigger.

Also, are any stockmen knives devoid of the little spey? I like a long spey, but would rather have a pen if it has to be short.

What should I be looking for? New or Used doesn't matter. Mostly want a good quality knife.

GEC, Buck, Case, Boker, Moore Maker..... anyone with a good knife.

Thinking about it, I do kind of prefer carbon steel, but doesn't have to be.

My Boker stockman has the best fit and finish of all I have. The buck 301 is pretty large but only stainless, another favorite of mine is a old timer 8ot, great size and nice thin carbon steel blades.

Case has some Large Stockman in production. But (as far as I know) there´s none with a penblade instead of speyblade. But several Case Medium Stockman are made with a penblade instead of a speyblade - the one in chestnut bone and CV for example.

You could look at Schatt & Morgan, Queen etc etc ... maybe they have something for you.

I hope you can find a good knife for your needs...

I would look for a Case 6392, or a 6375. Another great option is an original Schrade ( not current production) 8OT...

Case brought out a 3375 awhile back. Great knife, CV blades, it's yellow, and reasonably priced. It won't take much work to find them in a search

Large CASE Stockman Amber bone cv should cover it.

Böker - Germany- Large Stockman is very worthwhile, smaller than the CASE but not much, round bolstered but still a good large knife.

You might take a look at the Queen Heritage series, more Cattle Knife though, but big! Queen Cutlery's Amber Carved Stagbone handled Stockman in D2 is worth considering surely?

Schatt & Morgan Woodsman fits the bill for blade configuration, but in more of a center swell than serpentine handle at 3 7/8". Enjoy the hunt, it's half the fun in this hobby.

I also prefer Carbon Steel, but one of my favourites is actually a RR Sowbelly Stockman Andi sent me :)

The closest thing to a stockman with a true 'long' spey, is the Moose pattern. For Case, that would be the 6275 pattern (in jigged bone). Same frame as the large stockman (6375, at 4.25" closed), but in a 2-blade config. That knife won't have the sheepsfoot, however; just the clip and the long spey, at opposite ends.

The spey blades on the other 'large' stockman patterns (6375, 6392, even the slightly smaller 6347 pattern) are still large/long enough to be very useful. Almost all of the larger stockman patterns (over 3.5" or so) will usually have the spey instead of the pen. The pen blade is almost always found in smaller versions, in place of a spey, though some small stockman patterns do have a very small spey (Case 6344 pattern at 3.25", for example).

I have a couple of Case, a 5 blade & standard Moore Maker and a Boker stockman, my Boker and the standard Moore Maker ( gift from Gevonovich ) are my favorite. I always liked the stockman for its variety and utility, at work I always use the sheepsfoot blade most, I recently purchased a large Boker congress ( 4 1/4" )with four different blades sheepsfoot, spear, coping, & pen and am finding it to be extremely handy as a utility tool with a great selection of blades.

I am unaware of any stockman knife with a long spey blade. There are some whose "spey" blades are shaped closer to a "pen" than a "spey".

As David (Obessed With edges) suggested, if the spey blade thing is really bugging you, you might expand your search to include other patterns. I have seen Whittlers with a Clip, sheepsfoot, pen.

This has been in my sights for awhile. Maybe this would work for you.

A couple other possibilities, though somewhat harder to come by:

The older 6347PE (1970s and earlier) from Case is a 3-7/8" stockman with the sheepsfoot replaced by a fairly large pen blade (still leaving the spey and clip). If you want to keep the sheepsfoot, maybe not the best option.

If the sheepsfoot and pen in a larger frame are desirable to you, the Case 5-blade sowbelly (T.B. 6539 SS) is a 3-3/4" frame with large and small clip, standard spey, sheepsfoot and pen blade. Definitely a 'handful' of knife, and not exactly thin & light in the pocket (here's a pic of one of mine):

Case does have a few. I've got a couple of Schrade that are 4 inches. If you'd like there are some Rough Riders that are 4 3/8. I've never had any trouble with a Rough Rider, they're inexpensive but well made. I've got a Robert Klass that's 3 7/16 but tha is shorter than you're asking about. I do have a black Robert Klass that's 4 inches. I'm sure there are others but those came to mind. I think I'll try to run down Tidioute 555. It looks nice.

I highly recommend Queen's #9 stockman with D2 tool steel. These are 4" closed, and come in a variety of bone and wood handles. Mine is the current release in curly zebra wood. Great knife. It wouldn't take much grinding at all to convert the spey to a pen.

A few years ago Queen made a run of Robeson MasterCraft 4" stockmen with a different blade set. Slender clip master with sheepfoot and short but stout clip for the third blade. I was fortunate enough to find one in green bone. They can still be found ocassionally on the auction site.

Here is the Case 4 1/4" Large Stockman in Amber Bone. This is a chunky little knife, I really like it.
I have no problem with the spay, I look at it as the sacrificial or beater blade.

I am going to assume this needs to be used for work. Given that I would recommend a working grade of knife such as Moore Maker. They have a 4 1/4 and a 4 1/2 inch stockman pattern.

Thanks for the input guys! For those of you with a large stockman, what is the length of your spey? Do you find that blade useful?

I have a medium stockman, but find the spey to just be too short to be all that useful. I love the spey on my Trapper though.
