Let's talk about the Stockman pattern.

I love the short spey on my GEC 53 stockman. I just purchased a case trapper yesterday so I dont have much experience with the long spey. I tend to gravitate to smaller blades but bought the trapper to try the long one out. I am jaded to recomend the 53 but its a heck of a knife with all the right features for me. I need to update this post again but it has a lot of info http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...omparison-of-GEC-s-53-79?highlight=rockgolfer

You guys are making some great threads. I have had my eye on 3 bladed knives for awhile now.

You might like one of these, 4 1/8" closed, GEC Whittler Stockman, long spey and pen, although I prefer a sheepsfoot on a stockman pattern.

I know its not quite as long as you mentioned, but the Schatt and Morgan railsplitter might be worth a look.

Thanks for the input guys! For those of you with a large stockman, what is the length of your spey? Do you find that blade useful?

I have a medium stockman, but find the spey to just be too short to be all that useful. I love the spey on my Trapper though.

It isn't the length. It's the shape.
I don't use the spey much on a stockman. If it were longer, I still would have not much use for it. I don't find the shape to be useful in my usage. YMMV.

As it is, I tend to keep the spey blade sharper with a more polished edge than the other blades on the knife and to save it for those few instances when I need that extra measure of sharpness. For those instances, the shorter blade is a goodness because it gives me better control.

I also prefer the longer spay of the trapper over the short stockman spay. The moose pattern has been mentioned and I just wanted to second the nomination. It doesn't have a sheepsfoot blade but most of them are built on a stockman frame and they do make a good and comfortable large working knife. The long straight edge of the spay blade works well for making straight cuts which is something I would use the sheepsfoot for if I were carrying a stockman pattern. Some people don't care for the long spay blade but I wonder if they wouldn't change their mind of they gave it a chance. The more I used them the more I discovered how versatile they can be. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks everyone. Those GEC cigars are tempting. I'd like to see the spey swapped for a sheep's foot, but I looking at the pics, I could go with a traditional arrangement with the spey being so long.

I'm really leaning to a Buck 301 though. The only Buck I have is a small trapper made in China and a used 301 might be cheap.

From what I have read the Buck is a solid knife that will treat you well. Look forward to seeing pics of your final choice neighbor ;)

Benton. Closer to you then Russellville. Never been down to Louisiana yet, been itchin to go bow fishin out in the bayou :)

Well, I’ve never bowfished myself, but there are a few outfits that do it. I’m actually not from here (I did grow up in Mississippi though), but there is a lot to like. Had 4lbs of crawfish yesterday. Yum, yum.

Neither have I but it looks like fun ;). I am a transplant from the west but love it out here. The state slogans sum it up...Natural State and Sportsmans Paradise

You know that GEC whittler seems just about right for what your looking for. Could get that pen modded to a coping if you end up not liking the combo and have everything you want.

I hover in these types of threads until someone says they are thinking about a Buck. I think that is the gentlemen's thing to do from a one company collector. Besides I get to hear about and see some nice knives.

Since you sort of commited. Here is a photo of the 301 scale types you will be able to chose from. Blades will all be the same.
All but the black sawcut scales are riveted on. The red and dark wood are layered, stabilized 'Dymondwood'. The red now comes with the writing on the reverse side and the standard blue shield on the front.. The yellow is smooth Delrin. The sawcut black is a Delrin like product called Valox. If you favored durability the old sawcut scale still leads the pack.
