Lets talk GEC!

Joe, I've got a 78 prim bone myself, and love it. Mine was a 8+ when new, but I left the blades open 2/3 of the way for maximum spring stretch for about a week, opening and closing them many times with mineral oil, and it is now a very smooth but firm 7. Mine is a medium for color, I like your dark one a lot!

Has anyone else got one of these:

It is a GEC SFO for Smith & Sons who are custom knifemakers in Louisiana. It is a #21 "Bull Buster" with 3 changes:
it is a Lockback, liners are stainless steel in place of brass, and the pivot pin and washers are more heavy duty.
Smith & Sons claim they check each one to be sure all is as it should be before selling them (same as AGR).
Mine in Maroon Micarta is perfect, everywhere and shaving sharp. In particular: opening & closing is smooth, lockup rock solid and the LB release requires firm pressure, not the very stiff release that some LB's have.
GEC did 'notch it up' for this SFO. Mine at least, is a very nice knife.

Sweet! Is this a recent SFO?

I got this one 3-4 months ago. Made in 2014 as stamped on back tang, so yes, relatively recent. And, you are right, it is a Sweet Knife.

Great Eastern also did a full run of these without the lock as the #21 Bull Buster Farm & Field Knife.

Hmmm. Have they always had the steel on the 21? That's one of Smith & Sons selling points "Steel instead of brass".

I see people writing that (at least some) GEC knives with steel liners have stainless steel liners.

Does anyone know for sure if the farm & field knives and others with steel liners are stainless or not?

I have seen others state Stainless steel on the Mudbugs. But, S&S website only refers to them as "steel". I would guess 1095 like the blade. But, that's just a guess.

I highly doubt that it could be 1095, because the liners don't patina like the blade and spring.
