Lets talk GEC!

OK, so I'm not imagining it. Thanks for that info. Whatever they did, it's definitely worked. Both knives came out of the tube screaming sharp.

OK, I know that this comes up pretty regularly, and I know that the people that talk to GEC regularly come on and say that nothing has changed, but something has changed with the way GEC is sharpening their knives at the factory. Every single GEC I've bought new has needed a reprofiling out of the tube. Then, this last fall I got one of the latest 77 barlows and a quick stropping was all it took to cleanly shave my arm. Yesterday I got a 21 in O.O. from their last run and had the same experience, a couple swipes on the strop and it was ready to drop in the pocket.

The 77 was put up for a couple months before I used it at all. Christmas Day was the first time it actually cut anything for me. Since then I've had it in my pocket every day and it's seen a good amount of work. It still hasn't needed to be sharpened. I just strop it now and again and it's still shaving hair cleanly. I'm very impressed with it.

Like I said, I know that our dealer friends are going to come on and say that nothing has changed at the factory. Maybe I got lucky twice in a row. I don't know. I don't mind putting an edge on a new knife when I first get it, but it's nice to not have to.

These are also the two best knives I've gotten from GEC F&F wise. They are shockingly well made, even for a GEC. I'm glad to see that even when they're already at the top of their game GEC is still pushing themselves to make a better product.

The last three recent knives I bought, a 77 Washington Jack, a 77 Northfield and a Navy knife all are what I call 'watertight'. That's when you can hold a knife up to a light and none shines through anywhere. I'd say it used to be about 1 in 5 that were watertight, but three in a row is a record for me.

I've had similar experience, though I haven't bought one for a couple months.

Both Queen and GEC are very aware of people's frustration with sharpness. While they may not have changed the process exactly, they are certainly executing it better.

A short while back, I bought a GEC #72 Lockback from that big site. The seller was upfront about the shortcoming of the knife, mainly very loose blade.
No walk and talk to speak of.
I bought the knife, and sent it back to GEC, and just received it back.

They did a GREAT job. I am pleased with the work on the knife, the communication, and the turn around time.

Thank you Chris

I'm no expert on GEC's although I have many years of experience with a multitude of brands over the years. Up until 5 months ago I'd never owned any higher end pocket knives. Since then I've purchased these four and all I can say is that each one has exceeded my expectations. Each one was received sharp, blades centered, and no blade play. The ONLY thing I can see that some here have mentioned is the one or two sunken pins. Immaterial to me.

You sure started with some winners joeradza! You should find the quality to be consistent across all the GEC models. I really like the Osage 73.

As of today I have only four GEC, 71, 15 Beer scout and two Charlie SFOs, Ancient Barlow and Sailor's knife.
I totally am delighted with all! Attention to detail, and particularly on the Ancient Barlow, is impressive!

Thanks, redsparrow. Thankfully I can't afford to collect because I find the styling of most of the GEC's very enticing. That's why I'm trying to stick to the single blade models that I favor. But, to tell the truth I don't think I can resist some of them. The one I'm currently eyeing looks to be the only one left that I've seen. If I wait it will be gone and then I will either have missed out or saved money. haha!

The personnel in honing / final inspection has changed a bit and I think they found a magic combination....

Lol, everyone needs some sharpening elves!

Just leave your dull knives on the kitchen table overnight and when you wake up, Bam! Sharp knives!

Interesting! My guess would have been bone, except that they also have jigged bone listed under the same knife.

Here's your answer everyone. Personally I'm good with it and think the 47's look great with uninterrupted stag covers.

Thanks for that post Tim. I think it'll be a good change and we'll have to see if they ever decide to bring the shields back...
