Lets talk GEC!

Pt, you sure are lucky with the pins. I average 1 out of 10. Oh well, better the knives are sound than a pin in a tube.

Pins and COA's. . So, I am still catching up on GEC lore. I have 20 GEC knives, several bought here on the exchange, but also 12 new. I have two pins. I guess that puts me in joeradzas odds corner? Also though the last 8 new knives have not had the usual COA in the tube? Did they stop issuing those?

The Blueberry bone isn't for me, but I will say that it's nice you can tell it's actually blue. I have a Stonewashed Blue #14 that might as well be called Stonewashed Black. :D

I've been way curious to discover if a light sanding might reveal more blue...? Not just on your knife or the #14 pattern, but on others that have featured this same "blue." The #38 Farmer's Jack, for example. Hmmmmm.

Hey Alan,

I've also found the pins to be a crapshoot. On a couple occasions, I've had duplicate knives from the same run and one will have a pin and one won't.

As far as COAs, I think the most recent knife I've gotten that had one was a 98 whittler prototype. I think they only do them for prototypes, factory test knives, serialized runs, etc... I don't think they've done a serialized run in a while. Does anyone remember what the last one was? Were any of the stag 72s last year serialized? I have a natural stag Coyote, but it has Christine's signature on the tube in lieu of the COA.

Hey John: Thanks for confirming that. I know the pins are very random and mostly, I don't care but some of them are kind of neat. On the COA's , I think you are right. Now that I think about, I think they are only the serialized knives. I didn't make the connection until you said that.

Thanks again.

I have 14 GECs. 10 were bought new from dealers, 4 through the Exchange here. Zero pins. COAs only with serialized knives.

Thanks for the info John. I think some of the pins are pretty neat. I do hope to get one of the Diamond Jacks with a pin! By now, I have confirmed thanks to you and Huelsdonk that serialized knives come with a COA. That makes sense.

Almost all Charlie's SFO's come with pins. GEC general production is slim to none. Charlie's SFO's are opposite in that I routinely get pins... Usually some interesting ones. I generally don't care too much about pins or tube artwork, but Charlie's SFO tube and pin artwork is something to look forward to. On that note, there's a tube artwork thread I've seen in the past. Maybe someone should start a button thread. It would be interesting to see all the different buttons and the story behind them.

That is really nice, Pokerface. I'm looking forward to this year's CK SFO Improved Trapper.

Poker, I agree about that being a nice model. Almost like it would be fitting in a Tuxedo at a wedding to jeans on a weekend.

I am looking forward to the Improved as well.
I have had a few of the single blades pass through my hands, but I had to unload them. Thankfully, I was able to break even across all of them coming in and leaving...
Hoping the bad streak is passed, I am aiming for the Improved...

I landed a definite spot for the Rotten Banana Bone Improved, but I tend to be love or hate with the coloration; due to that, this is a crap shoot.

After seeing how the other CK knives jigging turned out on the Diamond series, I put in a "maybe" on the other Northfield Bone Improved.
The color and jigging pattern (if any) have yet to be released, but I figure, if nothing else, it gives me time to decide if I like it when I see it on the GEC site.

All the pictures of the 48's in the previous pages made me pull this one out today...

The jigging on the Antique Amber is beautiful

Thanks for the pictures! I've got one coming. I'm looking forward to getting it. The Ebony with houndstooth shield look great together.

Did you buy a pack of pins from a dealer or do you actually own the knives that go with the pins? Because some of those pins didn't come with knives.

Not entirely sure I understand. How are you comparing pins vs knives owned?

Light sanding can work, and so can scrubbing really intently with an abrasive brush and hot soapy water or even alcohol or acetone. If you look at the colors of the new Diamond Jacks for reference: I turned a chestnut dyed cover to what looked more like the antique amber using the brush and hot soapy water and some acetone. Last year, I had some dark green almost black that had to be sanded to reveal more green, but that one ended up getting some contouring, a little akin to moderate stag, I had to sand so much. So I wouldn't go lower than 600 or 800 grit, and even then you'll probably notice the jigging change.

There was zero comparison. I was just asking because I didn't recognize some of the pins and wondered if they were purchased from a dealer. I wanted some of those pins.

Yes it is true I bought some of these pins at the dealer (TSA Knives, LLC) for $ 20, but others are from knives that I have.
