Lets talk GEC!

I am anxiously waiting for my first GEC knife :)
Thing is ... we are planing a 10 day camping vacation by the ocean in Prince Edward Island.
I just realized it may not be the best idea to bring it along ... but how could I leave it behind ?
Will it be ok if I oiled it on a daily basis ? ... or the proximity to the ocean breeze, salt and sand will be damge the carbon steel and it's not worth to bring it along |?

I would bring it.

There were some Left Handed 73's made too.

Harry

I'm not left-handed, but I picked one of those up a while back just because they're unique.

That was actually my first (and so far only) #73, but it's definitely got me wanting more! :D

I got into traditionals about 4 years ago. I think the photo below is my first 'state of the collection' photo and it's dated almost exactly 4 years ago. I don't have any of those knives anymore.

...

This part of your post reminded me of an old photo from a few years back. This was the first GEC group photo I ever took, a few months after I discovered the company. My GEC collection has grown a bit since then, but I do still have all of these knives but one. (I'm still kicking myself for selling that Ancient TC. :D)

The only “fuzzy” micarta I’ve ever handled was an older NW denim micarta. I was kinda surprised how it felt.
My favorite is old paper micarta like my scout- it’s smooth as butter!

I always thought that one was really cool. I wish they'd use that Micarta more often. (Have they used it on anything other than that one #15 Scout?)

I would worry about the same thing, especially never having taken 1095 around ocean water. If it’s a user, I say go for it. I once read where a guy rubs chapstick on the blades if he’s near water with his 1095 GEC’s. I might go a step further and put it on a Q-tip and get it in the blade well on the spring and the all on the spring outsides.

As a wood turner I also use this food safe beeswax/mineral oil combo finishing stuff for bowls. I would think that would work just as well and provide some oiling benefit (not to mention the sweet honey smell). If you use the knife just reapply as needed- this is the route I would go.

It will collect a lot of pocket lint, I’m sure- but you will sleep better with a GEC on your night stand while you’re on vacation. If something bad and irreparable happens to any user it can be a heartbreaker, but at least it’s easier justifying the next GEC purchase with the wife.

Which handsome GEC offering did you spring for?

Too true. Every cloud has a silver lining. While carrying and using a knife can sometimes lead to loss or damage, such an occasion is a golden opportunity to buy yourself a new knife.

I crossed the point of no return today with this Stallion and carried it for the first time. It has now metamorphosized from a safe queen to a user.

In my opinion the best pocket knife is the one that serves its highest function; Sharp, sitting in a pocket, and ready to cut stuff. It’d be a shame to waste that beautiful clip on knife fondlers and oglers. I do believe in having spares though, in cases where the knife might not be made again.

The things I would do for that parchment bone ancient TC.... oh my oh my.

Micarta- yes I have a few users in micarta. It stands up great. It does scratch. If you get a lot of scratches and want it to look nice you can always buff it- I’ve never done this. I wipe mine down with mineral oil to clean them and give it a nice shine. Micarta is a favorite of mine for sure.
