Lets talk GEC!

They left the door open to doing SFOs in the future. Right now, things are a bit unsettled. Why not just assume there's a good reason for doing this right now and relax? What happens, happens, and things will turn out fine in the end.

Personally I find the discussion in this thread interesting. I like hearing what other people like and dislike about collecting GEC knives. I also find it interesting to hear the thoughts of those apprehensive about this change as well as those that are excited about the possibilities.

In the Facebook group, one of the GEC employees keeps joking about bankrupting us all with the cool projects coming down the pike so I'm pretty bullish on the future.

perhaps finally I will be able to buy more of that second knife there. its one of my earliest gecs and I am rather sentimental about it. Thus it stays safe in the case and not in my pocket for fear of loss.

I want to have more than 30 seconds to buy a new knife I like.

i totally agree.

if GEC somehow makes this into good news for all of us then I will be extremely happy. imagine not fighting and cursing at the computer for a new GEC? That would be nice.

My problem With this news:

no 77 NF Barlow’s since it is Mikes
No 15 TC Barlow since it is Charlie’s
So many of my favorites are SFO’s.. special covers and shields.
And to be honest I don’t know who can make Northwoods on par with GEC.

I managed to get one of the 77s from the last run, but would also love to get one of the TC barlows without paying secondary market prices, so that is a bummer.

That said, if they can do a run of regular 15 barlows in a quantity that's more than a lolliscramble's worth, that would be fantastic!

Great discussion and I enjoy reading how everyone feels about SFOs and production.
It’s been a tough year and I am excited that GEC seems to have a plan of action and hopefully a strong future.

Case, GEC, Buck, Canal Street... not many companies left stateside so they’ll all get my support in one way or another.

I just hope that with no more SFOs I dont have to wait forever to see another GEC with a lambsfoot blade. I'm bummed that I missed out on Charlie's 93s but even if I did score one it would be hard to bring myself to use it with how rare they are. I also don't resell knives and get much more enjoyment out of my knives by actually carrying and using them. So if a GEC branded lambsfoot knife came out with decent production numbers, just take my money. I will buy them all.

One of the best things about SFOs is when it spurs GEC to produce a pattern they might not have otherwise, like waynorth waynorth 's Harness Jacks and Lambsfoots. So in that respect, I hope this isn't a permanent situation. On the other hand, I've never been interested in collecting complete sets of variations, I just buy what I like when I can.
Here's a picture of my collection of GECs in smooth white bone.
The second and third ones are SFOs, and the rest are plain old standard production Tidioutes and Northfields. There's no difference in build quality, and I think they're all great.

Lovely set...I'm not a fan of smooth covers whether its acrylic, wood, or bone (chemo left me with neuropathy) but I make an exception for smooth white/ivory bone because it is just so dang pretty. A couple of Mr. CC's finest SFOs, one a Tidioute, the other a Northfield:

Nobody matches GEC quality for traditional knives. Then the virus hit and politicians panicked like the trash that most of them are and they shut everything down. GEC should have never been shut down. Let's help them and encourage them with their recovery. This is a group of only 33 people who do things nobody else can do as a team. I thank Bill Howard for the risk he took to start this company and his constant drive for quality. I am the same age as he is. Never quit. Never surrender. Be the best. Treat people with respect. Mostly we all want the same things. This is America. In hard times we rebuild and help others. That's who we are. As least, that is the way I was raised. God Bless.
