Let's talk guns-I think I need a 1911 ;)

After finally narrowing my list (I think) of post-graduation gifts to myself to a 1911, I would love to know what you HOGS would recommend ;)

I couldn't fathom spending $1,500+ for a class ring I hardly even like, and would much rather get a fun toy like the 1911 and perhaps even get it customized. Everyone likes a good 1911, right?

I'm not overly concerned about concealed carry, and would ideally like a 5" barrel or perhaps a tad shorter 4.25" Commander style. I'd probably go with the .45ACP caliber, but am more than willing to listen to any other suggestions.

The only brand I really find aesthetically appealing for whatever reason are those made by FUSION firearms. I'm hesitant to move forward and contacting them because I see several negative reviews. Does anyone have or know of anyone with first hand experience with their products? Beyond looks, the owner, Bob Serva, attended my alma mater (Penn State) and got his AAS.

Now, obviously I am opened to all models from all brands; I just want something special. I also ask you keep it around $2,000 if at all possible. I can go slightly more than that, but only if it really sings out to me.

I really look forward to suggestions offered. In doing so, I hope you provide pics of your own 1911's for me to drool over :D

Thanks everyone!

I really enjoy the Dan Wesson Valor. Full size or the bob tail both really great guns. Fit and finish is fantastic!

For 2K you can find a very gently used Brown?

I'm looking hard at the new Springfield Armory Range officer in 9mm.

A 1911 is a must own for everyone in my opinion. I started my 1911 Journey over a decade ago. I went the Kimber road and I own only 2 as of today. If I had to do over again I would go with a Wilson Combat CQB. It is a little higher than your price range but a nice choice for a lifetime weapon. Not to mention if you change your mind the resale value is there.

The first gun I ever bought was a lightweight Commander in .38 Super. That was in 1973. 5 years ago, I used it to shoot 498 out of 500 to qualify for my Texas CHL. Get a 1911.

Everybody needs a 1911. I have at one point or another owned most of the brands out there. Favorites would have to be Wilson and Les Baer. That being said my Springfield TRP gets the most use. Just love the way she shoots.

A 1911 is of course way better choice than a class ring. There are so many brands and models out there it is hard to pick. I like Nighthawks custom line but it is going to be over your budget. There are still plenty of semi custom in your price range. Springfield TRP, Dan Wesson, ED Brown series (usually will run more but some of his guns can be around $2200 for base models at least that I have seen, slightly used) Smith and Wesson Scandium frame and a plethora of Kimbers. Really there are a ton to look at, but I would go ahead and eliminate any under $1000 because you are wanting a more special one and have the budget. An option is to get a 1911 one that you want and have it custom cerakoted, that would make it unique. The Colt Marine USMC 1911 in FDE would be a great option as well and runs anywhere from $1700 and up.

I was about to say "everyone needs a 1911," but Garth beat me to it. So I'll add that everyone needs a 1911 in .45ACP. I have a Kimber that I like a lot.

Another vote for a Dan Wesson,

Well yeah. You start with a 1911 in 45acp but lets not go limiting things. Got to play with the Springfield Range Officer in 9mm and I gotta say it was pretty sweet.

Springfield TRP. Its got everything you want and nothing you don't. (1911 on the left) There's a Kimber warrior on the right with the rail.

I've owned several 1911's but my favorite is my Les Baer Custom Carry. Here it is with close to 2500 rounds through it and a lot of carry and training time. Starting to look good I think.

Started with a Kimber TLE RL II. Then I upgraded to a Nighthawk GRP Recon. I love it. I'd love to grab a Dan Wesson next.

I have two Colts, one SIG, one Nighthawk, and three Dan Wessons.

SIG makes a good gun.

Nighthawk makes a fantastic gun, but at twice the price of a Dan Wesson.

In the price range you mention, I think that Dan Wesson is unbeatable. I have a Valor, a Heritage, and a CCO. If I ever buy another 1911, it will likely be a DW Razorback 10mm.
Also, in my opinion, the Heritage is every bit as good as the Valor. Unless front strap checkering and thin grips means a lot to you, the Heritage is the much better buy.

I will never spend another cent on a Colt. Some say that they have got their act straightened out. I hope so and wish them well. My experience is with a 1970's and a 1980's era gun and has left me with a distinct, (maybe unfair) bias against Colt.
