Lets talk small sheath knives for the outdoors.

RokJok ... What don't you like about the Yari's sheath?
Here's a couple of threads that have talked about the Gerber Yari. The first thread contains my comments re: the sheath.

The sheath issue can be fixed with a TekLok for belt wear or a Pull-Dot strap for IWB. Both pieces of "fix it" hardware can be ordered online from Blade-Tech.

Oh, I plan to use the Dozier..eventually.;) And I know I will absolutely love it. Any outdoor ventures I go on the Dozier will be with me. I will use the Talon mostly around the homestead where it will see all types of work, some of which knives weren't really designed for.:) If it gets beat up or even breaks then so be it. I doubt that it will break (I've never broke a knife) but I'm sure it will get abused.

Neanderthal, does the Master Skinner fit well in larges hands?

As for the Busse, it will be a large chopper type and will be carried in the pack for the "big" jobs. Splittling, chopping, ect. when hiking and camping.

Well thanks to Owen I ordered a Talon in the 154cm on Friday. Thanks Owen. No, actually I have been looking at this knife for a long time and just wanted half a reason to get one.:) I ordered a Dozier Master Skinner from AG Russell about a week ago but needed something to fill the wait. I will also use the Talon even after the Dozier arrives. I figure it will take me some time to bring myself to actually using the new Dozier.;)

Next stop, Busse! I'll have to really start saving now.

I've been happy with the 154cm Talon, got it last year and used it all summer/fall.

Dave : The Master Skinner is about right for my medium size hands, certainly not oversized. Until the checkering was done, I actually prefered my Slim Outdoorsman so far as "hand comfort" goes. You might consider the Camillus Arclite Cuda in D2 (A.G.Russell exclusive) for $50.00 and have custom scales installed. Very similar blade to the MS although a little thinner. Unfortunately these comments are late since the MS is on the way. I have no doubt, however, that you will love any Dozier product.

I neglected to mention, IMHO the size and shape of the blade on the MS is absolutely perfect for hunting and all general camping purposes. It's not a chopper, but that's what my GB mini is for.

Dave, I hope you're as happy with the 154 Talon as I've been with mine. I did have a custom kydex sheath made for it, since the factory one was loose, and the full-size TekLok seemed kind of bulky.
Those Master Skinners look great. I've done some lusting over them (and a couple of other Doziers). Maybe one of these days...:D

Neanderthal you have me kind of worried about the grip size. I have pretty large hands. I was told that the handle was 4 1/2 inches long and rather thick. I sure hope it feels good.:)

Owen, I think I will be happy with it as long as it fits my hand well. If it don't I'm going to send it back. When I talked to 1SKS he stated that he was 6'4" and had fairly large hands and while we were on the phone he unboxed one and held it. He felt that it should be fine. I was/am kind of worried because the specs say the handle is 4". I hope it works ok.

BTW, where did you get the sheath? Did you have to send the knife away? I was kind of wondering if an inside waistband sheath would be nice.

Thanks guys,

Dave

Dave,
It's an Elite Tactical Carry Systems sheath. Some info used to be available through Darrel Ralph's website (Bob Bailey of ETCS is his stepson-also makes the sheaths for Darrel's fixed blades). That info is gone since Darrel got his new website, but I'm sure you could contact Bob by emailing him or just calling the shop (www.darrelralph.com). I sent two knives, plus had one from Darrel coming, and got them all at the same time (how UPS damaged, and then lost the package, and poor irate little Owen went to the UPS hub and found the package himself is another story:mad: gotta love 'em!). The sheaths are great, though. Perfect fit. There's one of my brootiful scans in this thread:

Normark makes sheaths for the Talon, and I've gotten four sheaths from him and been very happy with them. You won't have to send him the knife, either, since IIRC, he has a Talon, now. Great guy, great sheaths.

I'm 5'6", and have hands to match, so I don't know how it would fit you big people:)

Owen, those are very nice sheaths. I like!

Why is the lanyard hole so big on your Talon? Do they come that big or did you openit up some? Doesn't seem that it would be very sturdy back there if you had to hit something with it. You know, hammer something like knives are NOT made to do.:D

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, it's not really that big. Just one of those light tricks from the scanner. My scans are like a private joke with me, myself, and I being the only ones in on it. No matter what I do, what software I use, what settings, I can't get a really realistic scan to save my life. No depth to them. Some of the scans these guys post around here look like photos. I'm so jealous.
After months of blaming my scanner instead of my incompetence (surely that can't be it), I've finally decided that I was right all along. It's the dang scanner's fault:mad:

Dave : The handle on my MS measures 3 13/16 inches. Mine was purchaseed when A.G.Russell first offered them for $125. Perhaps they've been changed over the years.

RokJok - Thanks for the link to your outstanding Yari reviews!, some how I missed yours, but I did see Sergiusz's review (also outstanding BTW). Thanks again. - Frank.

Well fella's I recieved my Talon (154cm) today. I really like the knife and sheath however I'm a little concerned about the finger guard. As I stated before I have large hands. I am still deciding whether to keep it or not due to this so I have no cut anything yet. I absolutely love the design and shape of this knife I just wish the handle was just a little bigger/longer.

I will probably end up keeping it as it seems it would make a very good all around utility type knife. Even when my Dozier arrives I will still probably carry this more, in fear of beating up the Dozier too bad. And even if I decide to carry the Dozier primarily, this would be very useful in the kitchen. I could also let my son carry it on our little hikes and excursions. That way I would still have it with me.:)

Anyway, I sure wish either I had just a little smaller hands or the handle was just a tad bit bigger. Then it would be just perfect.

BTW, it says "1 of 300" on the blade. Any idea why?

Thanks,

Dave

I know it's not going to be as sturdy as an F1 and it's not a full-tang knife (although I've read here the tang goes almost to the lanyard hole). On the other hand it's really lightweight, which appeals to me. It looks like it would be a really good slicer. I'm not looking for a chopper or a prybar (how much chopping can you do with a 5" knife anyway). The most abuse it would have to withstand is the occasional baton beating to make kindling.

Dave,
1 of 300 'cause there was originally a 300 unit run in 154CM (all labeled "1 of 300"). I say originally...ASSuming they made more, but don't know for sure.

Just ordered myself a Busse Badger Attack 3 in 3/16" stock INFI and snakeskin micarta handles. 4.5" blade and overall length of 9.75". Seems like this should be a great carry size utility knife. At $200, it might be too much for what you are looking for, but I doubt if a person could break it in normal use. Plus, the lifetime guarantee would cover you in case you were able to destroy it.
