Let's talk Sprint Runs

I'm not a collector. By that I mean at this point in my life I'm not a person that buys knives to put unused on a shelf to enjoy them being there or for them to appreciate in value. I buy knives to use and carry. I've considered becoming a "collector" but I'm just not sure I'd get much joy out of that.

Anyway...I'm relatively new to Spyderco. Had them in the past but never hung onto them. I have 7 total at this point and all are users in some capacity. There are some sprint runs that I think I would like but my question is; do any of you carry your Sprint runs or are they more collector pieces for the above two reasons?

Just curious...

I may have a few set aside but most I carry. Depends on so many things, mood included, but yes I buy them to carry and use.

I use my sprint runs for sure; they're the best in the bunch.

Can't wait on the Caly 3 in HAP40!

I now have a handful of sprint/exclusive knives and most have been carried/used. Only a couple are still new in the box but they will also get used at some point.

I'm also anxiously waiting on the Caly 3 HAP40

Nothing wrong with carrying sprint runs..that is what they were made for after all.

However I do believe in having backups in case of loss, theft or simply wearing out/breakage.

Generally speaking Spyderco sprint runs get harder to find and go up in value over time.

I carry a Cruwear Millie a lot and also have one BNIB on stand-by just in case..

All Sprint's, all carried..

Like speedseeker, it depends on many things off which one or how much, some of them get carried.

Say What!?!?!? Hap40 Caly!? How did I miss this!? Need one!

Like the other posters here, I have both Sprint knives that I carry and some that I keep stashed. I've learned that I should buy my EDCs used so that I don't feel bad about breaking in a collectible knife. If I buy them new, I don't carry them. It works for me.

Does anybody know the release date for that Caly 3 in HAP40?

A good majority of my knives are sprints. And unless it's gotten for me as a gift it goes away for something I'll actually use

I have a related question. I picked up a Techno in trade - it is one with the CPM S30V blade. I understand this was a limited run, possibly a mistake? Is it a "sprint" run, or just an unusual piece? I am thinking of modifying it by heat-treat colorzing the scales and replacing the blue backspacer - is this a crazy bad idea (as in I will ruin its value)? Is it particularly valuable as is? I carry it in my EDC rotation.

Thanks for any and all input,
TR

What's wrong with using the sprints the caly 3.5 sub is one of my faves and no reason why one shouldn't enjoy the blade in usage if they please.

I don't buy anything that will not get carried and used.

Currently a CRUWEAR Manix 2 and a HAP40 Delica.

Im to the point now i use all of mine. I never kept them to gain value, but would sometimes want to keep them mint. Now i only keep what i use/carry. My sprints are only a orange pm2 and black ppt as of right now. (To the OP) Btw out of curiosity, what 7 spydies do you have right now?

And awesome collection winnerone! Is that all the foliage green spydies?
Thanks Sigsog! Yes sir, to my knowledge, it's all of them and then some.
The first 2 rows are stock.
The 3rd row: Endura to Ladybug, are Hap40 swaps.
The Urban wharnie sprint and CTS dlc PM2 sprint, are scale swaps.

The 4hrs row, Native 5 CF/s110v sprint, with Boomer52 scales.(as are both Delica's) One with ZDP and the lil para, ready for a Hap40.

Doesn't matter to me if it's a sprint, dealer exclusive, limited edition, or custom. They all get used the same.

Yesterday and today was HAP40 Stretch, Caly 3.5 SB, and Cruwear PM2. No backups. They'll call to you, and then you'll wonder...
I've got a few NIB Sprints, but the great part is knowing at anytime you can just walk over to the stash and take one out. It's like your own personal high end store.

I just started as well and have 10 spydies thus far, my only sprints are the stretch and manbug hap40 and I carry them more then others. The steel is just amazing.
