Let's talk Sprint Runs

No Sprint Runs, but "potential collector value" has never stopped me from carrying something I like. Among the knives I occasionally carry are a "pre-production" CF Chaparral, a bolstered Stretch prototype for an Exclusive that never got off the ground, a "one of a dozen or so" prototype red bone Kiwi with pinned scales, a 2009 Spyderco Forum Native, and a modified jigged bone Kopa.

I use every knife that I buy, and I've used the snot out of my Elmax para 2. A ton of work around home and on the job with it. I'm not afraid to mod it a little as well, the tip was reprofiled after a drop, spine rounded, scales and hardware swapped out, new clip, etc.

The only sprint I have is the 204p Military and it is currently my EDC. I say carry them. How else can you appreciate the different performance of the steel???

I do understand buying two of a sprint, one to keep fresh and one to use. When I do that its really to have a replacement should I lose the one I use. They are rare after all and it would suck to have a favorite knife get lost and never be able to replace it. Which reminds me. I should get another 204P Millie before they are gone.

Im waiting for the Knifeworks Ti RIL/Carbon Fiber and S90V sprint. I will be buyng two of them

I was about 18 months ago I did a trade with a great Brother here at BF and got the EDC of my dreams. I'm speaking of my M390 bladed, C-36 Military model. It's occupied even more pocket time and I'm speaking of even more than my hallowed C-60, G-10 handled Ayoob model.

Hey if I like a Sprint Run as good as I do the two aforementioned models there is no way I would subject them to being safe queens. Some Spyders are just so good they are absolutely meant to be used.

I have a related question. I picked up a Techno in trade - it is one with the CPM S30V blade. I understand this was a limited run, possibly a mistake? Is it a "sprint" run, or just an unusual piece? I am thinking of modifying it by heat-treat colorzing the scales and replacing the blue backspacer - is this a crazy bad idea (as in I will ruin its value)? Is it particularly valuable as is? I carry it in my EDC rotation.

Thanks for any and all input,
TR

I have the same model with S30V and I use the hell out of it. I don't ever plan to sell it so no reason to baby it. I did replace the spacer with Blue Ti standoffs. Awesome small blade.

I have several sprint run knives, HAP40 Delica and Endura, and a Superblue Stretch. I use them. The Delica is carried the most and looks it. I did stash away a new CF/M4 Para 2. I'm pretty sure I'll use one day and I wanted to get one while they were still available. They are getting expensive now, but I'm considering buying another Delica in HAP40 to put away since it's about my all time favorite. Eventually I'll lose or damage it and then I'll be sorry not to have a backup.

There have been so many Sprint Runs and Dealer Exclusives the past 13 months (see list below) with higher number of pieces produced that I see no reason not to use them. Fewer increase in value and sometimes longer down the road. ParaMilitary2 is usually excepted.

I know we're only two days in, but so far I've carried a Sprint Run knife everyday this year. The Sprints are some of the sweetest knives, I can't help but use them! Probably have another one tomorrow...... Some HAP40 perhaps....:)

Picture just because...

I have the same model with S30V and I use the hell out of it. I don't ever plan to sell it so no reason to baby it. I did replace the spacer with Blue Ti standoffs. Awesome small blade.

Thanks, kjd.
I'm carrying mine today. Put a really crisp edge on it last night, just with the fine stones on my sharpmaker (extra fine rods on order :) ). It may be my sharpest knife at the moment. I'm thinking a custom ironwood spacer might be kinda cool. I'm gonna use mine. I'm not that hard on knives, so I really don't expect to ever wear it out.

I'm not a collector. By that I mean at this point in my life I'm not a person that buys knives to put unused on a shelf to enjoy them being there or for them to appreciate in value. I buy knives to use and carry. I've considered becoming a "collector" but I'm just not sure I'd get much joy out of that.

Anyway...I'm relatively new to Spyderco. Had them in the past but never hung onto them. I have 7 total at this point and all are users in some capacity. There are some sprint runs that I think I would like but my question is; do any of you carry your Sprint runs or are they more collector pieces for the above two reasons?

Just curious...

i carry mine. no reason not to carry them unless you want to collect them and maybe they will be worth something later, but probably not. only the rare and really limited sprints are really collectors and worth something. but people collect them regardless.

im glad the sprints are not too expensive, because they often have better blade steel. and most spyderco's are made to be used and well.

plus 1 to the Mules also (tho i dont like to carry fixed blades).

I have many Sprint Run and Exclusive Spydercos and use them all, that's the best part about a Sprint Run/Exclusive they have better steel, which makes them better to use.

If you want to invest/collect something, I suggest Real Estate and Oil Wells.

I even cut up my Sprint Run boxes to test the edge! ;)

I only buy sprint runs and carry them all. I did buy a second pm2 m4 cf for stash purposes in case I lose or damage the other one. Plus cf is sezzy.

I have 12 Sprint Run and DE Spydercos. I carry and use them, though I do have 4 Para2's - M4, Cruwear, XHP, M390 - that haven't been used yet. They will, but with the other 5 Para2 users and a bunch of other folders it just hasn't happened yet.

My interest isn't so much in the exclusivity of Sprint/Exclusives, it's having the different steels that I like.
