What do you guys like in a hatchet, tomahawk, breacher axe, etc?

I'm considering doing a small run of compact choppy devices and want to know what qualities you look for. :D

This is just for fun, these are a long ways off from being made.

Everyone loves the old American axe patterns heh. A sweet felling axe would be nice! A lot of guys miss the convex (rounded?) faces that the American patterns used to have that are hard to find outside of restoring old axe heads. Not exactly compact I realize... I'm sure you'll get lots of input on this one!

For something from your shop, I think a breacher/defensive hawk would be cool. I have a few ideas.

uhhhh, hell yea! I'd love a Hawk that could be used for camping / tactical matters. Can't wait to see what you come up with : )

Full tang, Japanese cord wrapping over wood or horse stall mat, convex edge, rearward facing edge, kick at end of handle for retention, large cutting edge with not too much curve, etc.

Design styles, I really like RMJ hawks. My favorite though has to be Dj's with americankami. He has a bearded axe that is just really is awesome. Sorry thought it better to give you
Styles to look at rather than a non knife makers descriptors. Lol

I carry a SOG Fasthawk with a braided lanyard in my backpack, for fast draw.

I like the size, but the 'glas handle feels like it would transmit too much shock to my palm if I were to *really* whack something with it. It's simply not dense or weighty enough to inspire that much confidence.

Something in ridiculously thick tool steel, with your 'knocker' pommel of course (maybe the very end grooved?) with an enlarged hole, and either plain gutted double-wrapped cord, fancy tsuba-maki or choice of Your-Carta™ grips with your tubular SS rivets. Maybe a chisel-ground blade on one side, and a mallet head or just a flat rectangular surface for smashin' shit with on the other. I'd use one as a rescue or even entry/demo tool.

I'd also like laser beams, used crank-case oil spreader, and some of those cool little sharpened tubular jacks to come flying out of the end, if someone's following me in a car. And an air horn that plays "La Cucaracha".

Oh this could get crazy. A hatchet from Daniel Fairly.....I see a hatchet that reminds me of a mutated meat cleaver. A blade that's 5" or 6" in length, squared off, no curves and thick as a politicians head. With a 14" to 16" handle. Something you could choke up on and use one handed, but enough handle for a 2 handed power chop!

Also, perhaps the head can be interchangeable and attach with some kind of enormous hollow, threaded fastener fabbed up from hardened rod stock, with it's own nifty little tool for tightening/loosening. Like an embiggened MTB chainring bolt in concept, but DFK style. Then you could offer blade profiles, configurations, degrees of finish and metals to be customized by the end user.

I'll start off with W2, shizzle-grind with flat back, green cord over black ray skin, and differentially hardened edge, to go as a pair with my 'dashi.

:D

Daniel! This is so cool!
I just asked a local blacksmith to make me a small, one-piece kindling hatchet with a simple cord wrapped handle. I bet you'd sell a few of these.

Do want.

How about a full tang breaching hawk with spike and pry end. Cord wrap over leather or kydex. Say 1/4 or 5/16 S7 or 3V.

Good stuff! I am always looking for the classic designs, they are the best. The flea market here can be a good source, at least here.

I'm thinking that too. I will use mine to chop kindling and ward off attackers but mostly to destroy things! I got to chop through a wall recently and it was a lot of fun! I have some friends who do demolition work on the side too...

I think I will be making one that does it all. It will probably be on the thicker side for that sort of tactical use... mass x velocity = all out destruction :D

We are on the same page design wise for sure!

The more you guys mention a wrap the more I like it... it would be cool to do some like that. They would really absorb impact that way.

Harmonic vibration is something I will consider too, some shapes will ring while others won't.

Those guys both do incredible work! I'll have to check them out for inspiration. Thanks

I really like it! especially the laser beam part

Micarta or G10 would be nice, I am even considering removable grips.

I think mine will be integral construction, good points... I want it to be rock solid. Great ideas!

I would buy one.
Sounds good!

That sounds too cool!

Have you seen the Fikes Jungle Honey? It isn't a hatchet but man it is cool! 2 handed chopper... Jimmy Fikes is one of the best ever.

That sounds nice! I have played around with a fastener design too, I like the idea of a take down model a lot.

W2 and a wrap sounds really nice. I like it.

Matt, we think alike! I have one drawn up that is very close, I think it is the best of qualities combined.

really cool...

Thanks for the input everyone!

Great stuff everywhere.

Keep on with the great ideas! :D

OH MAN,This is going to be cool!I am VERY interested to see the ax that comes out of your brain/shop!

Thanks guys! This has been in the works for a while now, I'm excited! Great to hear the responses.

Mr. T don't need no breaching tomahawk!
