Let's talk washers

Does any one know how to measure washer sizes so I can know what to buy if i decide to tinker with my blades(which I do a lot)? I agree with Reek on this topic. All of the surface areas matter in the smoothness of deployment.

Have there ever been ceramic washers?

Not sure, but isn't ceramic in general harder than the steels used in blades and liners ? The steel surfaces of blade pivot and liners could get worn out quickly by the ceramic washers under "normal" EDC use even if the pivot area was oiled. This is merely my opinion. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

So, are the washers (be it nylon, phosphor bronze, Turcite) more likely to wear out sooner than parts such as blade tang, liner lock ball detent and other locking parts of a folding knife even with proper care and maintenance?

When measuring washers you will need to measure three things:

Inside diameter
Outside diameter
Thickness

Yes...that is why we can use ceramics to sharpen our blades... :D

They use ceramic ball bearings in high end bicycle wheels. It may be possible to use ceramic washers in knives. At least they wouldn't corrode.

Ceramic washers would have to have a very high surface polish, and a thin washer would probably be very, very easy to shatter under the kind of impacts that guys here seem to routinely subject their knives to? No more baton whacks. :D

I placed PB washers in a couple of Emerson knives and it made the action as smooth as silk. The nylon washers never felt smooth.
