I posted a ? on the wilderness forum and have not recieved a answere, hope you can help.
I am looking for a new back-up dive knife.
I need a folder I can open with one hand and with gloves. sand could get in the knife, not much! how well do you think the lev-r-loc
would work? none of the dealers in my area carry them so if I decide to get one I will need to order it blind.
I noticed on one of the many banner adds
that a lev-r-loc is offered with a black tanto blade? I can't find it,what is the model #. it would be my choice for a strong point and corrosion restiance.any thoughts? Thanks,Frediver<><

Frediver,
Glad you found your way over to the CAMILLUS FORUM! While I'm sure the Lev-R-Lock would work as a backup dive knive, I'm not sure it would be the one I'd recommend. While the 420HC steel empployeed in the blade is known for its corrosion resistance[we do make it in a Tanto shaped blade, but not coated], there are steel parts INSIDE the zytel scales that would be difficult to clean properly after total imersion in salt water. And while they are sealed in the scales, my friends that are divers tell me that there is NO WHERE safe from sand that floats in the water when you are diving. If sand somehow got into the mechanism, there would be now way to clean it out. Before everyone else gets scared of Lev-R-Locks, let me say that the internals are made from 301 stainless[which is VERY CORROSION RESISTANT]. In the YEARS that my Dad and I have been using Lev-R-Locks as utility knives, including fishing around salt water, we have not had any corrosion problems. We siply rinse them with fresh water and put them back to work.

While it would be difficult for me to 'recommend' the Lev-R-Lock for a Diver's utility knife, there are a couple that come to mind. First, if you do in fact want a folder, take a look at the SIERRA Series...

This folder allows easy one hand opening via the sure grip cat's eye hole in the blade, a sturdy, simple lock back for safety, the blade rides on teflon washers for smoothness, and a secure STEEL pocketclip for retention. And best of all, it cheaper than the Lev-R-Lock, with a suggested retail price of $29.95 for the large, and $24.95 for the medium. Both are avialible plain edge or partially serrated.

Second, I would like to suggest our New ARCLITE neck knife from Darrel Ralph designs. Take a look...

This knife is also made of very corrosion resistant 420HC, and with no moving parts, would clean up easily, and while I'm not a diver, I would think drawing a sheath knife would be easier than opening a folder when wearing gloves. The ArcLite is availible plain edge and partially serrated, suggested retail starting at $27.50. We should be shipping the first of the new ArcLite's next month, and our internet dealers will the first accounts to recieve them.

Good luck, and please let us know if we can help further.

Will,

With dive gloves on, if you have a problem drawing a small knife, you can add a nylon cord lanyard (550 is best) to pull on with a bead or stopper at the end. Makes it very easy to wthdraw the knife! Attach the other end of the lanyard to your gear, so if you drop the knife, you won't watch it spin down into the depths. Even in shallow waters knives can fall down into all sorts of nooks and crannies, and either br impossible or dangerous to retrieve. (reaches into hole and comes out ith moray eel attached to hand...ouch!)

Maybe another choice would be the Camillus Cuda Talon in Talonite, Frediver. Depends on the size knife you're looking for overall. What waters do you normally dive in?

Thanks for the info. I normally dive in N.Cal.
I think I really need a folder. when freediving I just don't have any good spot to put a sheath knife. I always dive with a swimmers vest and it has one sm. pocket.
I will need to attach a cord to the knife
so I need to have a folder with a spot in the handle to attach one.
I will only be using it to cut line and poke a fish once & awhile. it will not be used for prying.
I see that the Sierra model does not have a hole in the grip for a line. do you know of any model that does? Thanks,Frediver<><
