Admittedly and totally inspired by a few members doing this type of thing long before me, i finally caved and decided to try a light steel wool session on my Lg Regular. I think it came out awesome.

It is however the result of an extremely light polishing, and it's hard to even tell the difference from a pic on it's own. I really should have done a few before and after pics, but i'll post a few next to my unpolished small regular.

Aside from the slight color lightening the other differences include a much smoother feel and slightly smoother look. If i saw this knife and had to guess i would still think it was blasted, only with a slightly different method.

let me know what you think. Thanks.

(update: The small sebenza is now finished as well. Exactly the same process, pics on page 2 - 4/29)

I think it looks like it just came back from the CRK spa

You did a great job  Rickster

Thats sweeeet, (IMO) it gives it that "custom" look. :D

Seriously, it looks awesome.

Chad, that looks clean... almost "glows" a bit. Was that weathered like the small Sebe?
I have been wondering what method to use, my Sebenza pocket clip has seen better days... and a slight attempt to polish it made it look worse in my opinion... almost like you cold see the lines in it. I was afraid to go any further, but most likely used the wrong stuff.

Great work Chad! Your small sebbie needs to be upgraded too:thumbup:

Unless someone really wants to see the scuffing and wear marks in the original Titanium finish, I'm all about sanding the surface down on plain Seb's. For me, it feels better, slides in and out of your pocket easier, and conceals future scuffing and scratches better. I'd love it if CR would consider offering stonewashed finishes on his folding knives - ala Strider and Hinderer. Nice job, Chad

Thanks guys...

The large was slightly weathered and scratched up, but possibly a little bit newer looking than the small. I have no doubt i can make the small look exactly the same though.

I would love to see some factory stone washed slabs straight from CRK, i think we've talked about it in the past... it's definitely my favorite finish, especially for EDCs and users.

I'm gonna add some close ups.

i took one real light swipe with scotchbrite... i panicked and immediately regret it. It totally left those lines you mentioned and in my opinion was too abrasive. So it may be helpful for you to know, i took this 0000 steel wool to the spot with the lines and it cleaned it right up. you can't even tell now.

This looks like its something I'll definitely do when my sebbies or umnums need it. Just to buy some time before I send them to the spa.

That's a great job and I have to say I'm a little surprised at how very well it came out. I'm assuming you didn't just move the steel wool in a straight line? How did you get such a perfectly matte-like surface? It almost looks like you put a steel wool pad on an orbital sander and did it that way???

hey thanks for the comments. The only area that I went in a straight line were the edges(spines?) I did those lightly prior to polishing the side of the slabs. But you're right, when I did the sides I did circular motions, although I did everything by hand. I made the mistake of starting out with a few straight motions and luckily going over it with the circular motions cleaned it right up, and made it look nice and even.

The whole process including the take down and reassembly took me a little over an hour.

Maybe I'll make a process photo essay when I do the small.

Cool, a manual, cordless, random orbital sander!!! :D :D :D

Awsome Job..........I did the exact same thing to my umnumzaan I got in a trade and it looked like new. Thats why I always thought 0000 steel wool looks much better than scotchbright. 0000 will not leave any scratches and preserves the stone washed look.:thumbup:
