Lg Regular Sebenza Finish after 0000 Steel Wool

I am thinking (which is often dangerous) - I wonder how a red or gray ScotchBrite pad on a ROS, run at low speed with gentlest pressure, would work???

Im not sure about the ROS, but i'm sure there are guys on the forum who have done something very very similar to what you're thinking. I seem to recall someone mentioning red scotchbrite in the past.

i just finished the small sebenza as well. I tried to match the lighting and composition of one of the original pics, and it end up making for a pretty good comparative pic. The process, time and result are all pretty much the same. I'm really diggin it.

I wonder why CRK don't just stonewash their scales as well. The beadblasted finish is really pretty primitive for such a high end knife.

I personally quite like the contrasting finishes, also while tumbled Ti looks slightely different to tumbled
steel I think maybe there would just be too much of one finish if it was on the scales and blade.

Nice work, Chad. I especially like the look of the smooth scales with the silver hardware on the small seb.:thumbup::thumbup:

I was thinking of trying this too on my Small 21 but I'm too nervous to try it.

Does the color really change as much as it seems in the photos? Its seems like its much lighter in tone/shade after the treatment?

:thumbup::eek:Those look fantastic!

Please PM me your method

didn't forget to do this, i was just typing something up. I'll PM you as soon as i can.

The color change is pretty accurate. However, just FYI, i just showed the large regular to a friend of mine who also collects CRK, and he told me without knowing he almost won't be able to tell the difference. He noticed it being a little bit smoother and could tell the color was a little bit lighter, but this method i think provides a very subtle difference. Which is why i like it.

That's a great tip about using steel wool on the titanium. I gave my edc small Classic a go :D

I couldn't find any 0000 grade in the store yesterday so I got the best I could which was 000 super fine. After the wool I did all the outsides and edges with Micromesh cloth sheets. I started with 400MX then 800MX before finishing off everything, including the scale insides and washers, with 1200MX which is a mirror polishing cloth. The scale bevels came up the best of all, they are really shiney while the general surfaces are still a duller matt but a lot smoother than before.

The action also seems to be better now, I think it's smoother. A very difficult thing to take a picture of to show the improved finish, for example the mirror finished bevels look dark, but here's an idea of mine before and after;

i think that looks awesome. I'm almost positive the 0000 is even finer than the 000, and from the pics i can tell. But of course more than 50% of this methods results are in the feel, and the look of course is very hard to capture with photography.

I see you rock the no pocket clip. i was thinking about doing that with my small too. how do you like that?

Hi Chadridv,

Yes, you're right about the grades of wool - the 0000 is finer than the 000 which I used. The finish is very hard to capture but I think it makes a world of difference. So much so that I think everyone with a plain titanium knife should do this. It's a small job too and makes the knife so much more user friendly to touch while also having the extra benefit of a more hard wearing finish. I can't thank you enough for the idea :thumbup:

Yes, I love the small Sebbie clipless. I call this one my edc knife because it replaced my Barber slipjoint in full-time carry. I also rotate a large Sebenza on a belt sheath but this one is always in my front pocket. As it's deep pocket carry, I decided to remove the clip and it feels 100% better that way. Although it doesn't bother me one bit on the large, on the smaller knife the clip seemed to be more noticeable and it was just in the way of a comfortable grip when sharpening pencils, etc. I would give it a go and I'll guess that you'll prefer it clipless, too :)

Cheers,

Mark

I remove all pocket clips from my sebenza's & install clip inserts to cover the holes. Looks & feels way better. Large I carry in a CRK belt sheath on my right, small I carry in a CRK slip pouch in my lft front pocket. Alway have at least 2 on me. 3 if carry the mnandi in my lft frt shirt pocket.
