Lg Sebbie vs. Umnumzaan

Do you own a Sebenza?

I own both, and do not see the validity in saying that the Umnumzaan is an improvement, much less "far superior" to the Sebenza. In fact, I view them as two very different knives that happen to share similarities in manufacturing (and manufacturers for that matter), materials, and cost. The Umnum in my opinion gets the nod for a more tactical flair, with the utilitarian flair going to the Sebenza.

The pivot systems are different, but I don't see how one is any better than the other. Same thing with the blade stop.

Having owned/carried/used Sebenza's since 2002 when making the step up from other manufacturers' folders, I am here to tell you (IMHO of course), other than perhaps ergonomics, there ain't much room for improvement with the Sebenza. The Umnum is simply a different folder.

Professor.

I haven't counted lately...but currently own over 40 sebenza's....and plan on owning as many umnums in the future.

Does that allow me to have a opinion ? :)

You speak of simularities...but i see no rocket science here...all frame lock folders have similarities.

The ergo's on the umnum are far superior.

The lock is much better.

The operation feels better because of the larger pivot.

The blade grind is wicked compared to the old basic bland grind of the sebenza.

What is a tactical knife.? :jerkit:

I don't see any camo or tiger stripes on the umnum. :D

You say that you have been using and collecting reeve's since 2002...If that makes you a proffeser...i started prior, so does that make me a PhD.? :D

These are just my opinions of course. :)

Since either knife comes with a lifetime guarantee (and since either is likely to last as long, or longer) I think what it essentially boils down to is personal preference. I own a Large Classic and it is one of my favorite knives. I plan to own an Umnum in the future, and I expect it will live up to my expectations as well.
Which knife is better is a topic that could probably be debated unto eternity.

Well said and 100% correct...were just choppin it up here and i meant no offense to the professor. :)

PS... Biginboca, good to see you posting again. I believe my very first Bladeforums transaction was with you in 1999, as it would appear when we first joined. Best to you and yours!

Professor.

Thanks Professor...You have some memory! Until last week I hadn't posted here in about 6 years.

It's all good ya'll. Personal preference as aforementioned is the name of the game.

Biginboca, I'll never forget finding these forums and the great transactions I've had over the years. Hope to see more of you around here!

Best to all.

Professor.

Well my intention in starting the topic was not to decide a winner in a "which is best shootout". It was to find out which one people who had owned both preferred, and what characteristics of each knife defined the preferences.

Such info could help myself, and others, make a well informed purchase decision and all the replies here have been helpful for me :)

I'm also looking forward to a left hand Umnum. Sometime in March is what Heather told me. Left hand folders as investments suck, as I have found out the hard and expensive way. I like them and use them and that's good enough for me. I've always been very grateful to CRK for including us southpaws even though for them it is a money losing strategy. No other company does that and that is one reason they have won my loyalty. I think the umnum has signifigant upgrades to the Seb as has been noted previously and the lack of a bushing probably keeps the cost very close to a large plain Seb. A bushing is only one part of the picture and not necessarily the holy grail of folders, IMHO. I think it will make a great train knife and I'm looking forward to EDC'ing mine when I get it!:D:p;)

I wouldn't listen to bigmarks opinion either. He only owns or has own every folder I have ever wanted. If you pay any attention to the custom knives for sale you "might" recognize his name. Telling big mark he doesn't know what is up about folders is alot like telling antonanton he doesn't know anything about tom mayo timascus knives. I would show him a little resepct. Just my $.02.

On topic if the zaan is not an improvment why would a great maker/designer bother to release it? I hit it big on all the other knives he made but this time....
I am sure that the zaan will prove to be just as timeless as the benz. I personally am glad I have more than one choice now. Before it was a large sebenza or straight to a custom. now I can throw the zaan in the mix.

I have had a large Classic in my pocket everday since they introduced them and it is the best pocket utility knife I have ever owned - period. Two tours in very hot sandy places and it has always done what I asked. I have cleaned and processed more deer and elk and small game with it than I can count. It is a super knife. Only way to make it better is to buy one of the Annual Seb that is all pretty.
All I can say is, "Thanks Chris."

Beautiful knife! But.... These pictures just cost me $400. I hope you're happy! Just so you know, when my wife finds out, I'm blaming you. :D

It's sort of a pyramid effect, I had to blame someone for mine too, I'm just glad I didn't have to go first.:D I'm a follower not a leader.
