Life expectancy of a Laptop?

They don't make them like they used to.
John

They also don't charge for them like they used to either.

Life of a laptop is often determined by the user, their habits and all. I would offer more input on them but it would only serve to show my bias..Personally, I would say my employers laptop is best...but then that would be a self serving comment :D

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 for 5 or maybe 6 years now and never had a problem with it. I should add that it is 90% of the time sitting on my desk, powered, switched on for about 10 to 12 hours a day and I mainly use it for writing, making calculations, storing pictures, internet, e-mail and programming.

I've had 3 laptops the last 7 years... That's about 1 every 2+ years. As software become larger and more resource hungry it doesn't make sense to keep a laptop longer than 2 years; at least in my viewpoint. Assuming you do basic word processing, surf the internet etc. You can probably stretch this a whole lot longer. To make it last longer (hardware wise) the advice given above will suit you fine. For a home use unit a desktop will always be more preferable due to easier upgrading, cleaning of internals etc. As of this year I have decided to use whatever laptop that my company issues and use a netbook for when I am on the road, built myself a high end AMD system for a lot less than what a good laptop might cost and that's future proof for at least 3-4 years as it'll support future hardware in USB3. Dust... The biggest computer killer. Keep it out of your system and most hardware problems can be avoided.

Im in the IT industry and i can swear by IBM products.
The build quality and service is top notch.
Im running a X61t for 3 yrs now and not a problem in sight.
Our whole company uses HP and ive seen a few of them die in the 3 yrs ive had my IBM.
So IBM all the way for me.

I generally switch about every 2 years, but that being said I have some notebooks that have Windows 98 and still run okay. They are super slow and the batteries are shot but they still "work."

As long as the screen is usable, they can be resurected indefinately. Mine has been saved a few times, the most recent saw a ram upgrade and windows 7. Having a friend with a developers lisence doesn't hurt either.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro A200 and I'd like nothing more than to be able to dedicate some time to intensively treat it to some long overdue attention, with this...

I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude D600 three years ago and it's still working like a champ.

I'm typing this on my powerbook that I purchased 7.. yes thats right seven years ago. I recently upgraded my OS, slapped in some more ram and have no plans on changing anytime soon.

The higher price in the beginning doesn't seem so bad given most of my friends are now on their 3rd PC.

my hitachi pentium 133 from 1996 still works, its useless with its 1gb harddrive and 32mb ram, but it works

it was a 3 grand laptop in its prime :)
