Life-time guarantee by knifemakers

Yes dishwashers do kill handles and most customers are apologetic that their "mother in law" or such did the deed when they were not looking. Micarta is my choice for handles on kitchen knives because I can refinish it to a new condition in these cases at no charge to the customer.

I offer free sharpening on all of my knives just to get them back into the shop so I can see how they are holding up in the field and what I can learn from them. Occasionally I have returned a brand new knife to a customer because of a flaw that I have noticed during my "factory tune up"... this goes a long way toward customer satisfaction.

Since most warrenties are for the lifetime of the maker (which makes sense) and a lot of makers don't have an active apprentice/son/son-in-law etc., what can be done when a maker passes away or is no longer capable of making repairs? Are there custom makers out there, that for a fee, would repair another custom maker's knife that had passed away? I know makers don't like or just flat out won't modify another makers knife, but what about repairs when for whatever reason, the original maker can't do the repair?

There is a thread on GB&U about a maker who warranties for either eternity, or 500 years, can't remember which.
It turned out to be a funny thread. ;)
