Lifespan of the Alox Soldier

I bought this Pioneer sometime in the early 1980s. IIRC, it was the first knife I bought for myself.

I carried it quite a bit for several years, then moved on to different knives. For the past couple of years I've put it back in the rotation. The blade is a bit slimmer from being sharpened, and the reamer isn't quite as pointy as it was when new, but this knife has a lot of life left in it.

I dare say most alox knives are gone from loss long before they wear out. With proper sharpening it'll last as long as you. Probably longer.

FWIW: those of you who don't like the key ring on Pioneers - I swapped the split ring on mone for one about 2/3 the size, it's barely wider than the backsprings. Makes all the difference in the world, I really like it now.

I will If I can find one , they seem pretty hard to find !! I had my eyes out for one for a while. My soldier is the old kind with the hollow rivet , maybe I can make my own.

i remember reading a forum member purchased a few bails for the models with the hollow rivet...I have taken my bail off occasionally for formal wear.

Thanks a great deal you guys :thumbup:
I might get a second in case of loss, but by reading your comments I guess I will be worn out myself before my Soldier does :p

My Dad gave my an Alox Soldier for my birthday in '99 and when he passed on in '07 I got his NIB Soldier from his collection. The NIB is still NIB and my '99 is like new but for a couple of scratches. Tough as nails. Speaking of nails I used mine as an emergency hammer once. Hence the scratches (the outside ones anyway).
