Lifestyle Change- one knife carry

I am getting older (or is the world getting older around me?) and am trying to simplify things a little. I only carry one knife at a time now.
I started out with one knife when I was really young, but graduated to carrying a Buck 110 and my Boy Scout Whittler knife. I had the "big" knife on the belt for bigger chores and the small knife for everything else. I changed knives and modes of carry over the years, the small blade(s) didn't always change with the large blade, the large blade went from belt pouch to pocket clip. Last thing in my pocket was a Spyderco GB1 and a GEC #15 TC or GEC #68 White Owl.
I got tired of a lot of things- clip snagging, pocket sagging, wife nagging etc. I like simple. I like quiet. What to do???
I looked for a combination of size, weight, performance, etc. that would let me do at least 75% of what I wanted to do with a knife in one package. That was tough.
I finally got the nudge I needed when I heard that Benchmade was discontinuing the Ritter Griptilians. I got a mini grip in M390.
How has it been so far??? Not as difficult as I had thought. I still miss the bigger blade for some tasks. I still miss the small, thin blade for other tasks. I also miss the "look" of the carbon fiber on the GB or the bone on the TC (I see a set of DOAT scales in my near future ). I like the way it disappears in my pocket. I like to light weight. I like the blade shape/belly. I like the M390 steel.
All in all, I like the change. Why did it take me so long???

Good for you! I can't help but carry 2 or 3 at a time. A buddy at church Sunday said " you know, most people only carry one knife at a time". I am not most people, lol.

Thanks for sharing. I have experienced a similar evolution. I have realized that my knife needs change as the seasons change. I have given up on sticking with just one! Recently I am trying to get down to 4. A small and large nice knife and a small and large beater knife. I think I am there. right now can't get the beater knives out of my pocket. Never expected a cold steel finn wolf and a crio g 10 would be bumping my CRK 21's out!

I generally carry 2-3 when I am going out. I live by the one is none, and 2 is one philosophy.

So you wear two pairs of pants, or have a spare pair of shoes you carry around with you? How many flashlights, or wallets? No, I get it. I'm kidding. But to me, two is one applies more to mission critical items like lights when caving or oxygen tanks when diving. Most people can get through the day no problem without a knife.

I generally have three sharp options available at any given time.

I pretty much only carry one. When I am at our place on Lake O and using the boat a bunch for salmon fishing I might have a belt knife on my side, most likely a 311. When I was younger I would carry a large belt knife when on the scoot. But have found that mostly I just carry a good folder. That could be a sod buster, a Deer Hunter model from Rough Rider or one of a myriad of pocket clip folders most notable an old MACH 1 from 2k, a CS UH toughest beater folder I've ever owned or a classy Crawford large Falcon. keepem sharp

PS I could go on but won't! Just got a small clip point made by Greg Neely that I am going to be working into the equation also

I totally get what you're saying, Gaspumps. There's something very satisfying about reducing the amount of gear on your person, IMO. While I'm far from being a minimalist, by many forum members' standards, I have a very small collection-one true Every Day Carry folder and a couple small multi-tools. I don't subscribe to the "Two is One" concept. I will carry pieces that compliment each other, but not if the pieces are overly redundant.

I don't see anything wrong with carrying lots of gear if that's what someone wants to do, but none of us needs to be carrying multiple $400+ knives at once(none of us "needs" a $400 knife, period;))
