Lifetime knife, will pass down...

For a true heirloom knife, I'd seriously consider commissioning a unique piece from one of the many talented craftsmen here on the forums.

I am taking my knives with me.:D
While a good idea, the price and lifetime warranty came into consideration. For example, the Case Tony Bose Wilfred Lockback Hunter was designed by Tony, sent to Case, scanned, then the parts are wire cut to the exact dimensions of Tony's customs, not stamped. This is the closest you can get to his work outside of spending $2,500.

This isn't your standard Case, but a standard production made Case could be an hierloom as well, I just liked this particular pattern, and had a bit of spare money for once haha.

I think I'm ready to buy THE knife, for me. I want something I'll use daily for years on end and pass down to my 2 year old son one day. I'm debating between two, but open for suggestions.

Case Tony Bose Wilfred Lockback Hunter
Or
Hinderer XM-18 3.5 spearpoint or spanto

I know these two knives are abit at the opposite ends of the spectrum, but I really like both, and they are similar in terms of being lockable, and blade length.

One issue I've ran into, I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and it seems like finding a nice Case Wilfred Lockback hunter that doesn't have some dings or issues after setting on the shelf for a year is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. I'm returning one due to sloppy bolster work, bolsters are completely uneven and shaped worse than a Case standard production knife.

In my eyes, you give me a perfect Case Wilfred Lockback Hunter vs a standard XM-18 and I'll take the Case, but finding a perfect old school, yet high end slipjoint/lockback not close to $1,000 is going to be rough. Most XM-18's seem to be uniform, and pretty good quality control.

Any thoughts, suggestions, etc?

It's funny that you think you're going to pick the knife of a lifetime right now and hand it down to your son. While you may hand it down, history says you're going to be buying a 'few' more knives that will qualify as the "one" knife before it's over. ;)

This is more or less how I feel. I want to land on "the one" for EDC that my family will recognize, years down the road, as "my" knife (and especially as "Dad's knife") . . . but I have a feeling I'm not really going to get to pick which one that turns out to be.

I mean, I'll get to pick it if it's one of the ones that I bought for myself, sure, but two years ago I thought I was carrying The One, and a year ago I thought I was carrying The One, and now I think I'm carrying The One -- and all three are different knives. :D

No disrespect to the OP's mission or its genesis intended. It's a noble quest, and I wish you luck!

Well guys, I received the knife on Thursday. The fit and finish weren't up to par, sloppy riveting job on the pins, the back scale looks like it was touched up with a sharpe, and the walk/talk felt grainy at first, and after a few openings, it got super tight and would not snap shut.

I went ahead and went with a Chris Reeves after getting the wife's approval. It was just not meant to be with the Case, I sent it back the day I received it.

Bummer the Case didn't work out. I wouldn't right it off entirely though, or at least the idea of it. A "lifetime" knife doesn't necessarily have to be an expensive one. You're getting the CRK, and that's a fine primary knife to carry, but how about a small one to use for dress carry or in "mixed" company (like work, or at the Post Office), or simply to use when whipping out a big honkin' Umnumzaan seems silly. Like a Case stockman, mini copperlock, or even the little Peanut. Or a Sway Back Jack or teardrop if you want to go with a Bose. $40-70 or so depending on the choice. Or spend a bit more on a GEC.

Sorry about the Case. It was a looker. Nothing wrong about your second choice though.

Post a pic once it’s in hand!
