There comes a point (or two or three hundred and eighty nine) in a knife maker's life where he makes a mistake! I have arrived at that place once again! But maybe my boo boo will be your gain. And who knows, "S Davenport" knives with blemishes may be worth $$$ millions some day. Ha, yeah right. Most of the time, knives like this become "shop knives", but this one I figured I'd let it go with a reduced price. You can see the G10 bolster just doesn't quite line up on the spine. It does on the bottom of the handle, however. OK, with that aside, a few tid bits about the knife. The steel is 8670 chromium alloyed steel from Alpha Knife Supply. 8670 is an extremely tough carbon steel. This allows for very thin hard edges at low angles. I left this very close to as-quenched hardness, which is around 64-65HRC. It gave my India stone a run for it's money. I got tired of getting nowhere trying to establish the edge bevel, even tho the pre sharpened edge was ~.007"!! The diamond/silicon carbide American Mutt benchstone took on the job faster, but still took some time just to cut the edge. I love this steel. It is a pleasure to work with, polishes very clean, and is very stable in oil quench (no warps). Handle is locally sourced mesquite with a black G10 bolster, brass pins. This is the medium sized version of my fixed blade hunter, and feels great while holding in with the hammer/reverse, or "finger on the spine" grips. It is very, very light. Handle was finished with Watco Danish oil, and sealed with wax.
