Light jacket for general wear and rain

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all your help. I am going to go with the Northface Venture or the Marmot Precip. Is there a difference between these two?

God Bless

FROGG TOGGS! +1 The fabric is not super tough, but it is tough enough. It does not pack as tightly as some, but it is really a high performer. Not real expensive, either.

I've been wearing a Mountain Hardware jacket made from their conduit silk. It's about 2-3 years old now, so, I can't remember the exact model and it's not on the jacket anywhere. It's light, breathes well, and withstands tons of rain. I've been wearing it down here in FL in the summer rainy season. I've been to Oregon and New York in the winter, and wear this jacket as a shell, with a fleece jacket underneath it and a base layer.

Check the discount places like Campmor to get good deals on last year's models.

Conduit Silk bombed on the governemnt breathability tests - AFTER I bought a MH jacket on sale.

The Northface has a cooler logo on the front, and you will pay for that.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for everyone's suggestions I went and bought a NF Resolve jacket. It fit the bill just about right. Again, thanks for everyone's input.

God Bless

Anyone know where Marmot's Precip coating fits in the hierarchy of fabrics? I just picked one up from REI a little while ago on impulse (last year's model, clearance sale). Marmot's "Membrain" and "PreCip" aren't the same thing right?

Vital thread, thanks!

Marmot gear seems very good but that jacket is too short for my taste. Anything a bit longer?

I've used a marmot precip for about 3 years and have had no problems getting wet. mtnfolk has the same one I do also.. I think it works just as good as other material.

I picked up a North Face Apex Bionic softshell last year which retails for about $150US last time I checked. I don't recall what I paid for mine though. I had to shorten the arms a touch and it's a nice jacket for spring conditions, say 10C to 20C. I was looking for something to use on colder winter days but found it a bit too light for that.

Earlier this year around Feb or March I picked up an Arc'teryx Easyrider Men's Jacket which is another softshell that is made with Polartec Power Shield High loft fabric. This is a much warmer jacket with snug wrist collars and a nice high collar for the windy days.

I read every review I could find on this jacket before buying. I saw a few that mentioned they found the collar too wide but I think it fits great, especially if you're going to layer a collared fleece underneath for those sub zero days. It cost a bit more (around $300 US but I got it on sale for $230Cdn) but I could easily see myself using this in all but the coldest weather and it's very comfortable. I've been wearing almost every day since I got it, including days with temps just above freezing with only a t-shirt on underneath and it did a great job as a windbreaker.

Good luck with your search!

Thanks boomer  Good to know it works for a trekker like you.

For information sake, a longer jacket means more material which means more weight. The Precip was primarily designed for backpacking.

That's true of course, but if I'm on a day walk with a light pack I feel I need something longer.Ponchos are OK but can be rather clumsy when moving etc.

Reviews of Marmot Precip.

Ed: Bad link. See below.

What is Precip coating? It varies. Think "Carbon V."

Link doesn't work for me, I can dig around more later. Thanks though Thomas

I'm lost on the "Carbon V", the only Carbon V I know is Cold Steel's.

ETA: Nevermind, I get it now :o. Could be anything at any given time.

I have a Marmot with Schaffer water repellant fabric. Like it lots so far. Have to see how it holds up.

The only parka I could find w/ eVent that didn't cost a small fortune was a "new, old stock" Lowe off eBay. Unfortunately, it's mostly white. A mistake. Looked like I was homeless after one weekend. Wait! Maybe that's good.

Well it's going to depend a bit on what type of weather is most likely. Here in Northern California, from May to Sept the weather tends toward dry. About 90% of the time the biggest thing to factor in here is the wind. It can come up quick and can make things unpleasant even on a very sunny day. For the weather here I find that the most useful item is a simple Nylon windbreaker. It will keep the wind off you and light rain. For around here, that's generally all you need to worry about. It packs down small and the one I have has a hide away hood that is nice if things get a little wet.

Other places will have different conditions, but this works for me.

I wear a North Face Venture made from their Gore Tex copy called "Hyvent."

It does very well for me.
