On my last trip, we had tried roasting hot links over a fire with sharpened sticks but the things kept tearing and we lost a few to the fire. Just happened to see these on a recent trip to REI (man I spend SO much time and $ in that damn place!) and got one of these http://www.rei.com/product/761281?vcat=REI_SEARCH It's such an ingenious little piece of wire! I used it at home roasting hot dogs over the bbq and it works great.

I also picked up the spork combo type thingy LMF makes. It's super sturdy for being plastic http://www.rei.com/product/737339?vcat=REI_SEARCH

I have the sporks and love em, have not tried the firestick yet....will have to get me one of those.

I was eyeing up the fire fork the when we were at REI before our trip 'up nort' last month. The wifey, a master marshmallow roasting chef extraordinaire, wrinkled her nose at the LMF Fire Fork. She's content to sharpen a stick and have at it. Me, I'll probably pick up a fire fork or two on my next solo excursion to REI. I think they're cool.

I'm not quite sure what a "hot link" is, but I'm guessing it's something like a hotdog, a sausage link, a bratwurst, etc. Did you just poke a single sharp stick through them? If so, you might do better next time using a stick with two smaller sharpened prongs in a Y shape and poke both branches into your link. Just a thought. I used to do it that way. Think gig or pitchfork.

Yup it's like a big, spicy sausage type thing. We did the forked stick method, piercing it through twice. It does work, and has worked in the past. But this little gadget is easier. I remember in Scouts we used to use bent coat hangers in the same fashion.

I'm with your wife on this one. I like to sharpen a stick also...gives me another chance to use my knife! :D Plus there is a nostalgia thing...traditional campfire craft. -Matt-

Thats expensive for a piece of wire.

I found a telescoping 2 prong stick at Wal-mart about 2 weeks ago for $3.95. It expands to around 30-36" and collapses to around 10" or so. You can also rotate it while holding onto the handle. It has a a "thumb wheel", piece of plastic, around the metal shaft that spins it. I still haven't pulled it out of my trunk thats why the specs are not perfect. Also found the LMF sporks at Wally world for $2.44. Just had to buy another one. (Already bought 2 from REI.) If anyone is interested I'll post pics later, as the Wal-mart website does not list it. I can't even remember who made it.

those hot dog cookers are cool... i have a few made by a different company... i love those sporks too... we all have some of them here.... my wife and boys, uses them in their lunches...

As any half-educated marshmallow connoisseur knows, metal marshmallow sticks get too hot and melt the marshmallow from the inside causing it to slide off or down the stick. Wood holds the marshmallow securely and allows complete heating of the marshmallow before removing it from the fire!

DUH!!!!;)

They have a couple of the telescoping prongs at WalMart. One is from Coughlan's, and I can't remember who the other one is from.

LMF makes a folding knife with a firesteel built in that is incredibly disappointing. Their sporks and firesteels are not super complicated, but they are well made and reliable. The knife was total garbage. Lots of blade in the blade, sloppy lockup, crappy steel, etc. I was thinking that if someone stepped up and made a quality version of that concept, they would have a hit on their hands.

IIRC, LMF only makes the firesteel, Tool Logic makes the knife. But yeah, it's still not very well made.

I bought Grandpa's Fire Fork at REI a couple of weeks ago. I haven't tried it out yet, but it is small enough that it will find a place in my bag.

Hi. I'm FLIX and I'm a gadget-o-holic.

Here is the info: it is a Telescoping Camp Fork made by Ozark Trails. It expands to 34".

I have got to go camping soon!
