Well, I wasn't sure about posting this, then figured why not? :D
I was trying to figure out a way to carry this fire steel with me all the time, but is is sort of big to keep with my keys. Then I realized I carry my Leatherman pretty much all the time. I tried to wrap it on the sheath and use a rubber band.....but it didn't really fit well. Then, it suddenly came to me and this is what I worked out.......hopefully the pics show how it goes on. I'll try to explain:
Basically, thread the striker and plastic tab through the bottom of the sheath and up tot he opening. The wrap the cord around the flap of the sheath and slide the striker into the back extra blade flap and adjust the plastic tab to the bottom (or top would work too). The actual steel lays on top with the tip sticking through the loop hole of the sheath. I wear my sheath horizontally, oh, and the cord fits between my belt and the sheath loops when I put it on, making it even more secure if things got all messed around.

I see what you did there and that is quite slick! Mine came with the molle compatible sheath, but I think I am going to buy the standard nylon sheath soon thanks to this. I'll also be getting a firesteel ( or three ) soon, so thanks for the great idea! -Matt-

Great idea !!! and really good pictures. I'm going to have to try this with my leatherman.

Thanks for sharing

Hey, I've seen that post before, and I still thought your rig was AWESOME! I was trying to figure out how to do it for a while, and wanted to put one with my LM Wave, but I ended up attaching a blanck rod with a hole drilled through it to my key chain with some Jute cord.

P.S. If it is with your LM, no need to keep the striker, the back of the saw makes an excellent striker.

Does the Surge have a saw or a file on it? If so, ditch the striker. I have a Wave and the back of the saw on it is the one of the best strikers I have come across. Neat setup. Thanks for showing it.

Thanks guys! :D

Hey briangandrews, the Surge has a file and a saw. I'll have to try them as a striker.

I was messing around with that full length loop, and the steel is kind of loose fitting in it. May stick with my idea.

Plus I would think that I would be worried that I would accidentally pull the firesteel out when I take the LM out, and lose the firesteel.

I've thought about sewing a little length of nylon webbing to the side of a multi-tool sheath, to form a thin pocket for a firesteel. It'd be about perfect for one of the little Horseshoe Mountain firesteels ( www.hmfire.com )(which have the added benefit of a magnesium bar, in case the firestarting happens to be tough in your survival situation.)

cool idea...now i just need to get a leatherman with a nylon sheath to do this with...hmm...

I just got my surge.I have the leather sheath but it has all the extra pockets and spots for a firesteel.I really love it so far.

I tried the method shown here and couldn't get it to work well with the Wave sheath. I suppose that it's smaller than the Surge?

For those who missed it, this is what I came up with:

I just got a LM Wave with the leather sheath and my Army Firesteel works well with it; same as CanDo's pic above. Pretty awesome :)

One idea if you're going with the setup Farnsrocket shows us is to shorten the lanyard the bare minimum necessary to keep it secure (replacing it with paracord), and getting rid of the striker since you already have the knife with you.

squirrel,
sounds good :)
